I really enjoyed reading through the manga series and following Teito Klein's adventures. The world-building in this series was really amazing. You have the military and the Barsburg Church and its seven bishops aka the seven ghosts.
Seeing Teito's character development from an enslaved combat soldier to becoming a bishop was endearing and his best friend Mikage R.I.P. I liked how this manga wasn't afraid to talk about God , yet the worldbuilding as I mentioned, was quite unique. You have the overseer of Heaven aka God and he asks a soul what their wishes are, they can have three or even one. When a person fulfills all of their wishes they are returned to the overseer. A person can be reincarnated and choose how they want to come back. Mikage chose to return to Teito's side as a small baby dragon, but he could have easily chose to be human again. The reason is because he wanted to protect Teito. *wipes tear* Awww!
The most enjoyable aspects of the manga for me were #1 Mikage and Teito's friendship moments and how they basically became brothers. They were each other's rock in the military academy. They both had to go through grueling training (Teito suffering the worst of it). Mikage was pretty interesting because his family's background was that they were servants to another wealthy family. Due to Mikage's younger brother attacking him, he obtained a scar on his right cheek in the mark of an x. Thus, his face was made to be unpleasant to the eye, according to his father, so this made him unfit to be a servant. He had no grudge against his younger brother, he was thankful instead. He was happy he could choose his own path in life.
Another element I really liked about this manga was Frau and Teito's adventures and growth. They both started out pretty shaky, but Frau quickly became a confidant to Teito and since the beginning, you get the sense their paths were meant to cross. Frau is one of the seven ghosts and also carries a scythe that was put into his body. It is a dark power that can corrupt him and others, yet he fights against it the entire time. They both help each other fight against temptation, inner darkness, and want to be each other's salvation.
Out of all the ghosts, Frau has a really cool look and fighting style (in my opinion). How their endings play out was so rewarding.
Frau also has this running gag that despite being a bishop he chases after women and reads adult mags. XD
Dude, I can rant about this book and create my own just talking about it. I am sad it's over because now I have to find a new series to read. It's even more sad that the anime adaptation was never finished. :(
But yeah, if you read all this..wow!
Sorry I wrote an essay! XD
