So I managed to take an image of a Super Mario 64 promotion, which also contains an image of the scrapped level, "Floating Ruins" or the Japanese name. It seems to be from above instead of below.

Around January 1996, the development team of Super Mario 64 made a level called "Floating Ruins" or "浮かぶ遺跡" to replace Whomp's Fortress, it was scrapped though because the developers went back to using the model of Whomp's Fortress.
