Game Maker is the easist game for making any kind of 2D game. Granted, there objects and rescources used take up more memory due to some features, but for most 2d games it is the easiest. Just don't make your levels too large.

Do you need an engine that does not require any coding or an engine for a specific programming/scripting language? If you are still beginning your career as a game developer, then Game Maker is probably the best alternative (like It said), although it does not have a build-in physics engine (e.g. Box2D).

JNyknn said that there is no Physics engine in Game Maker however that is not true , Box2D is built in to Game Maker Studio.

Game Maker Studio has Box2D support? I didn't know that, although I used Game Maker last time six years ago, so that may explain something...

So if Game Maker (Studio) has support for Box2D, then it is probably the best engine/game making tool for 2d platformer.

yeah, but Studio costs an arm and a leg. Id suggest legacy GM 8.1 lite. It's free and I use it for most of my games. (I use some pro features but not very often)

great ,that now box2d is within GM ,I also didnt know that

Stencyl is pretty good, there's a game called "Baby Mummy's Curse" (or something similar) that was made in Stencyl, and it seems like a very nice platformer. I'm not sure whether Stencyl has Box2D support, and can't muster the energy to Google it at the moment.

If you're looking to make a game without using GameMaker/Stencyl, there's a C++ library called Angel2D that has Box2D integration. I haven't used it, but it is high on my ToDo list. It tauts itself as being easy to use, yet powerful. Something to think about, I guess.

I find Flixel is the quickest way for me to get something platform-y made. Either the original or HaxeFlixel. It's a library for AS3/Haxe respectively though, so you will have to do a lot of coding.

Construct 2 is the best,It has a better community than GMC,the updates are almost weekly and exports come with the program.

All in one package

unity now has 2d support i think its the best game engine but it requires coding and i don't think that it's a problem

I would recommencond GM Studio really powerful engine, also a pyglet but you need to be pretty sharp with python 2 as its a programming and you got to be a bit hardcore :) Its hard to recommend since I dont know your skill level as a developer. There is XNA if you fancy going down the C# route, but construct and GM are really really genuinly good

Give a try to this beautiful piece of software:

Game Develop

Is a software to make 2D games (and even it had some small 3D features) that is absolutely free and becomes open source a few days ago.

It's even more easier and intuitive to use than Game Maker and it has a very collaborative yet small forum community (even it's possible to receive help from the author of this software when you need guide). It cames with lots of templates and tutorials.

It hads lots of built-in automatisms that allow you to apply behaviors and physics with a simple click and you can export your game to Linux, Windows and HTML5 format (iOS and Android support are being developed).

try gamemaker studio i am using it for a while and it is awsome!

What about WiMi5?

Its visual editor lets non-programmers create HTML5 games and expert developers produce games faster than coding.

Hafo: NOOOOO! Not the terrible HTML platformer maker!!!

You may choose between unity, game make studio and game maker 8.1 all these according to me are the best.

There's also Löve aka Love2d, but it requires some proper coding skills, it's not a game maker type of tool, on the other hand it's more powerful than those ;-).

I came across Godot recently - http://www.godotengine.org/wp/features/

It seems to be a lot easier to use than Love2d, it's more like the game maker type tools, you might want to give it a try.

Have you tried WADE - http://www.clockworkchilli.com/index.php/developers

I Personally recommend Clickteam Fusion 2.5!

I would recommend Clickteam Fusion 2.5 as well because the first game I made was a Platformer, believe it or not, and I learned everything about making Platformers in just 2 hours :)

So you decided to come here to say hello and bump this old thread?

As far as this thread is concerned I would deem it spam.

Okay, this isn't the first time I've responded to a years old thread. But, I would recommend Platform Builder. It's a 2D sidescrolling game maker. It can do tons of things. It can be used to make causal projects, all the way to Super Mario World quality games. It's easy to use, code free, and easy to learn. A lot of editors promise these things, but do not deliver. Though I must say there are exceptions. But take it from THE biggest Platform Builder fan. Platform Builder is the WAY TO GO. https://gamejolt.com/games/platform-builder/182115 Check it out on gamejolt. Get the paid version off steam. Trust me. It's one of the best available.
