Game Jolt is hosting an official jam using the new and shiny jam system! This time, it's all about glitches. Glitches? Aren't they bad? Well, yeah. But can you turn it around and make a game with the use of them? Maybe using some glitchy art, sound or mechanics? The choice is yours!

You can visit the jam's page here.

The jam will go on from June 9th to June 30th, and there will be a week of community voting.

Talk about the jam here! I can put up team requests on this first post if you would like to advertise it for this jam. Also feel free to post your WIP screenshots and finalised games!

Good luck!

Sweet, I love glitches, although I'm not entirely sure are they so cool if they are done intentionally...

Anyway, the jam sounds interesting and I'm going to participate. The jam takes place in my summer holiday so I have more time than usual to program my game.

You know what? I'll give it a shot. Most of my games end up glitchy. Why not embrace it? XD

Why yes he does.

I have quite the experience in making glitchy games :)

I got 99 problems but a glitch ain't one.

...I had to.

So, since the stuff I do is usually glitchy as fuck, that means an intentionally glitchy game would actually be glitch-free?

My brain hurts.

I made a game entirely themed off of glitch_art and stuff, but I spent like 8 months on it and completed it back in march. This is an amazing opportunity to submit this because its incredibly relavent. Even though I didnt start it June 9th can I still submit it?

I'm excited for this.

This should make for an interesting first game for my framework :P

Sounds good, I'm in!

So, I know that we can't go in, with any game art or programming already done, but is it ok if we have a story already planned out?

Hmm...I got plenty of time on my hands so why not??

Anyone have any silly throwaway ideas? I've been wracking my brain and can't come up with anything compelling.

Tuttle Games, if you don't have any ideas for a 'glitch game', just program a normal game without glitches. After you have (almost) finished it, start adding glitches, like backward moving enemies, glitched palettes and tile sets (e.g. replace enemy sprites with power-up sprites), inverted controls etc. That's how I'm going to do it, I think it should be easier to add glitches to a working game than create them from nothing.

Well, you could also make the player have a super speed or something that moves them too fast and clips past walls.

@JNyknn thanks, I was thinking that'd be my fallback plan. And knowing my level of coding expertise, I'd probably encounter a glitch somewhere in the first 5 minutes of my prototype anyway :P

If anyone needs an artist who specializes in Pixel Art, Id be more than willing to team up.

I love it! I'll make a glitched remake of Jet Set Willy

It says 'uses glitches as an integral part of gameplay or otherwise embraces a glitched-out aesthetic' Does that mean that the game could be plain text but with glitchy text? Like the one shown in resources, and have the story based around a glitch?

Bennimon: It means to use a glitch or exploit ussually avoided (such as collision bugs) as a part of the gameplay.

But it does say 'or otherwise embraces a glitched-out aesthetic' surely this would mean that only the art and such has to be glitchy.

sigh The scoring is based on who does it the best. Yes, you could use just art that's glitched, but the idea is to make if fake-glitchy* as possible.

*Techniacally fake since the glitches would be an intentional feature. :)

I don't wanna be a winner, just take part :D And I do have a few ideas of how I can glitch it out, just wanted to make sure that if it wasn't possible (since the engine is all about text, no coding) then I would still be safe to enter.
