The ability to block users making them unable to see your profile, or comment on any of your games also you will not see their comments on anything else. They also can't add you or communicate with you at all.

This is a feature i'd love to see as there are toxic people on GameJolt who like to try and get under my skin quite often.

Can attest to that, I keep getting harassed by a small community of game creators and I just can't get them to leave me alone

First of all, if someone is harrassing you you should let us know! We can deal with these situations in some cases. Feel free to send an email to [email protected]

As for the feature itself, we do want to have it, but not exactly how you described. In general what we're aiming to do is blocking them from interacting with you through your profile and game pages but we won't prevent you or them from seeing each other across the site. e.g. if both of you leave a comment on a 3rd person's games - you will be able to see each other's comments.

Some examples of things that'll happen when blocking a user:

  1. They will be forced to unfollow you, any of your games and any of your playlists.

  2. They will be forced to unfriend you.

  3. If they are collaborators on any of your games they will be removed. This will remove any posts they made on the game as well.

  4. They will be prevented from following you, your games and your playlists.

  5. They will be prevented from sending you friend requests.

  6. They will be prevented from leaving a shout on your profile and from commenting on any of your games. Existing shouts and comments are NOT removed however.

  7. You will not get a notification from them when they mention you.

  8. They will be prevented from liking or disliking your comments. Existing likes/dislikes are NOT removed however.

  9. They will NOT be prevented from liking or disliking your games.

  10. They will NOT be prevented from voting on polls you make.

  11. They will NOT be prevented from buying your game (and you will also continue being notified about it)

Also we're not sure atm, but we might make it so that blocking someone will also make the other person automatically block you too to prevent a weird situation when one can freely talk to someone while they can't reply. seems weird, yeah?

Anyways, thanks for the suggestion. If you have more input lmk!

I'm not fully a fan of features like these... I sometimes had to announce publicly some bans and comment removals I had done as a moderator (while I didn't want to) because people blamed the game owner for not being able to take critics (it actually WAS harassment though, but that was easy to guess), and bans for harassment were often replied to with bypass accounts. A true moderator can see this, but a game owner cannot, and then the features can cause that what they are meant to prevent (which is why I always recommend to go to a moderator in stead of taking action yourself).

I am definitely not sure about liking/disliking games still being possible for people you block. I've been downrated myself out of "revenge" because I said stuff that was true, but what people didn't like to hear (before I became a mod already, and when I became a mod, the logs I gained access to confirmed my suspicions, but when I was a mod, I did see people downvoting my games after I deleted messages, even when I did so silently only generating a message with the system itself, so not leaving my name with it). People getting blocked because of harassment reasons take on any weapon they can get "revenge", and as a moderator I had the power to see through this and actively do something about it, but a normal member has not. This will really lead to a lot of downvotes in an abusive matter, so I definitely think that liking/disliking should not be possible for people who are blocked. Downvotes are, after all, the perfect way to be abusive to others, and if a moderator finds out, it's mostly by pure coincidence, or by the abuser being really stupid presenting themselves on a silver platter, making things easy.... My experience as a moderator makes me estimate the chance for a full scale abuse with very little catching chance approx 100% really! I don't think you'd want that.

Someone just commented on my game like 29 times the same thing saying that my games sucks and even insulted me. I hate those type of people. took me forever to delete those comments. I really just wanna block him from seeing my stuff after that.

Blocking people is sure a good feature because I was getting harassed a lot, like so much! Thanks to Gamejolt, now I can block all my haters.

If your hater is a true troll, they can easily bypass those blocks though.

And, I would keep blocking them and finally, (if they keep bypassing it) I'd report them to Gamejolt staff.

Oh, take it from a former moderator, some trolls even know how to bypass the staff.

Damn, that's going to be hard if the bypass it then.

Yeah, I cannot tell you much details, as I value my own professional position in these matters, but I can tell that some abusers I had to hunt down went to very great lengths hoping to outsmart me. And I hate to admit that some were even successful.
