Hey everyone! I'm really excited! I finally get to make this game exactly as I envisioned. And we finally can show it to you guys!
I hope you enjoy this small taste of the game!
You feedback is very important so don't hesitate to share your opinion!
Cheers, Nick!
This build was a fantastic play! I have a video of my experience with it here: https://youtu.be/OskXY6XcIwk
Visuals - The 3-D, clay art style and parallax wit plants and fences in the foreground struck the same balance between silly and serious that some Tim Burton movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas manages to pull off. The blues really put you in a space of darkness and seclusion of a dungeon, but the constant grinning and chuckling from Robbie Swifthand not taking things seriously is infectious. The game relies very heavily on a blue-orange color scheme that has been very popular in Hollywood recently, and whether that will be helpful, distracting, or something you won't notice at all will vary wildly from player to player.
Audio - The sound design for this build is very solid. There was never anything out of place that drew me out of my experience or distracted me from the technical gameplay, and sometimes that is all you really want out of the audio for a game. The music fits the dark atmosphere of the dungeon very well, though I wouldn't say that the tracks were outstanding or groundbreaking for the genre. Nothing super infectious like The Moon track from Ducktales, though I don't think that is incredibly necessary for a game like this. Most of the personality is coming from Robbie Swifthand and his design. One specific thing I do appreciate is that the background track starts when you begin a level and does not stop looping until you exit the level. Nothing is more unecessarily infuriating than the music starting over every 30 seconds because you are stuck on this one jump.
Gameplay - The movement in this game is very smooth. I don't know whether there is a bit of acceleration on movement or if it is a trick of animations and visual style, but I did not feel like the movement was jerky at all. There is a tutorial-ish area at the beginning that makes sure you know how to do basic movement (jumping, ducking, throwing) before you move on to the rest of the game, though I feel like there could have been some in-game indication of what button to press. As it stands, I needed to go back and look at the input descriptions on the Gamejolt page to make sure I knew what was happening. The controls are pretty standard, so people who play a lot of games will pick it up instantly, though the command for throwing threw me off (huehuehue). I played on a keyboard, so the throw button was on the opposite side from every other input. Based on the description, however, the build was optimized for play using an Xbox360 controller.
Bugs - I did not encounter any game-breaking bugs, most things I found were odd experiences with axes. The hitboxes seem a bit touchy, and sometimes the axes will intersect with blcoks that have come off the ceiling instead of colliding with them. Also if they move over blood spatter textures on the walls there appears to be some Z-order fighting and the blood textures glitch out a bit.
Overall a fantastic 30 minute rage-experience, I would definitely recommend this to my friends who like to jump and die.
