The horror genre is unfortunately on the verge of falling into a collective abyss of spineless non innovation. You may or may not agree with me and that is fine, because this is nothing more than a developers opinion. I’ll keep it short too, so if I missed something, why not let me know in the comments?
What is wrong with the horror genre? That my friends is the right question, and a question to which has a simple answer. Repetition. There’s only so many times you can make somebody jump with the use of jump-scares before they start to predict it before it happens. Jump-scares though, are only a small part of the answer.
There’s the sound too. The sound design in a horror game is the single most important aspect in deciding whether it succeeds or fails. There’s no need to throw monsters directly into the players face, when one could quite easily make the player imagine that there’s something much, much worse awaiting them with the use of some clever audio. What cannot be seen, cannot be understood and that is what really gets under the player’s skin, the sustained expectation of everything without the provocation of anything.
Now for some development updates. For convenience’s sake, in list form.
We have recruited a level designer.
We are looking into recruiting a sound designer.
We are currently testing out a lot of game mechanics.
We’ve finally purchased all of the models we need!
That’ll do pig, that’ll do. More actual game updates soon!
Got a question? Ask away!
