Hello everybody! I'm Paucw from LPS.
I'd like to start off by stating that the team is grateful for the support the DEMO has been getting as of lately. You guys are the best, and we couldn't thank you enough.
We've also been hearing a few pieces of criticism from a few people too. Don't get us wrong, we have nothing against criticism of someone's work. We are grateful that some people took the time to analyze the demo with a critical eye. And some of it helped us improve the DEMO from V3 to V5!
However, after a few discussions within the team, we came to the conclusion that we do not agree with some statements thrown around about the game, and I thought that would make a great discussion within our community. Whether you agree with us, or have a different perspective, everything's up to you! All we ask is for you to hear us out first, and then draw your own conclusions with what has been said.
SPC's development started around September 2020, meaning the game has been in development for almost a full year now. The original idea for SPC was to only improve upon the past games, and fix a few of the problems within them. Originally, there'd be no new-game, or any type of new content. But after a few days of planning and thinking, I realized that there'd be no reason to play the remasters if the only thing changed about them were the visuals, and nothing else. So, I started pitching ideas on what could be done to make people replay these games.
I've had all sorts of ideas that will be in the final product of SPC. Achievements, collectables, Easter Eggs, and much more. The idea of creating a brand-new game from scratch was pretty much an afterthought. I only considered it a possibility at the time, but, as we all know, that idea is now reality, and we are working on MNS.
SPC's and MNS' design philosophy revolves around replay value, which is one of my personal criticisms against the original Slendytubbies games. There's absolutely no reason to play them, especially when there are so many games that offer more replayability than ST3 could ever dream of having. Because of this game design philosophy, there were a few things that I knew from the get go:
The game wouldn't have a DEMO, and it would only get revealed when the final product was completed.
Of course, there was more to it than that, but the rest of the reasons involve my own private life, and I do not wish to make that public.
I know, it's really ironic now. We dropped a DEMO, when I originally didn't want to do it. I only changed my mind because a few close friends encouraged me to do it (Not trying to put the blame on other people, because, at the end of the day, the final choice was mine. So, if anything, I only have myself to blame, and nobody else.)
But, that's the thing. SPC wasn't developed with a DEMO in mind. It was supposed to release when the game was 100% complete. Because of this, the DEMO feels… odd, to say the least. And, I guess that's where most people who didn't like the DEMO are coming from, which I completely understand.
Trust me when I say that the game makes much more sense, design-wise, when the full game comes out. Why? Because… well, what's shown in the public DEMO is only around 18.6% of what the final product contains. And, yes, SPC will have a lot, but a lot, of content. Why do you think we keep saying SPC will be the biggest Slendytubbies game ever created? Because the DEMO is only a minuscule fraction of what the final product will contain, in terms of content.
That's why SPC, at its current state, might feel bland to a few people. And I don't blame them, really! But, I bet that most people are willing to change their mind when the full game eventually comes out.
The lack of maps? Well, we felt like if the DEMO had all the remastered maps in it, then there'd be no reason to play the remasters once the full game came out. The DEMO lacks enough features? If we included them in the DEMO, then there'd be no reason to play the full game. Do you see what I mean? We feared that if we included a lot of content in the demo, then we'd kill any and all replayability the final product will have. In light of that, we had to limit ourselves with the amount of content the DEMO has, in order for the final game to shine.
Of course, there are other pieces of criticism we received and that we do happen to agree upon. For example, the game's main menu looks a bit bland, which we agree to an extent. We've been thinking on revamping the entire menu for some time now, because even a few people on LPS' team have their objections when it comes to the menu. There's a few bugs here and there, too. However, if it doesn't render the game unplayable, then we decide to allow the bug stay, just so players can have more fun with the game. If it does render the game unplayable, then we fix the problem right away.
But besides that, everything else feels like it's being caused by the problems stated earlier. We apologize if the DEMO feels incomplete. And, again, I don't blame you if you think that way, but unfortunately, there's nothing you can do besides to wait for the full game to come out.
Like I said earlier, this blog was created with the intent to create discussion between the community. So, where do you stand in this? Feel free to comment down below your own take on this matter.
