The U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) was a Galaxy class starship launched in 2363 under the command of captain Jean Luc Picard.
It appears in the TV show Star Trek: The Next Generation and the movie Star Trek: Generations as the main setting, it also appears in the TV shows Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: Picard, in isolated instances.
Senior Officers:
First Officer Cmdr. William T. Riker
Chief Operations Officer Lt. Cmdr. Data
Chief of Security Lt. Natasha Yar (2363-2364), Lt. Worf (2364-2371) Lt. Cmdr. Worf (2371)
Chief Tactical Officer Lt. Natasha Yar (2363-2364), Lt. Worf (2364-2371) Lt. Cmdr. Worf (2371) (yes the chief of security and chief tactical officer were the same)
Chief Engineer
There were many chief engineers in 2363 and 2364, but in mid-2364 Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge took the spot for good.
The helm officer between 2364-2366 was Acting Ensign Wesley Crusher, who left for Starfleet Academy after that. He appears as a minor character in 2363 and between 2367-2370, and he disappeared with The Traveller in 2370.
The ship underwent a refit between 2370 and 2371, making it more battle ready. Although this didn't stop the rogue Duras sisters from obtaining their shield frequency, which allowed them to match their weapons frequnecy to that frequency and nullify the Enterprise-D's shields.
A few lucky shots with a torpedo were all it took, and the Enterprise had to be evacuated to the saucer section. They didn't do this fast enough however, and barely got away from the stardrive in time not to be killed by the shockwave from it's explosion. The shockwave knocked the saucer into the Veridian III planet, where it made a controlled crashland. Three other starfleet ships, including the U.S.S. Farragut, soon arrived to pick up the survivors. Although casualties were extremely light, that doesn't mean there were none. There were 1,012 people aboard at the time, with the captain being down on the planet. It is unclear how many survivors there were, although my bet is that over 1,000 people survived the crash.
Cmdr. Riker would eventually be assigned to a task force that would remove the Enterprise's saucer from Veridian III, as it's sister planet Veridian IV was home to a pre-warp civilization and the Prime Directive requires that they not allow them to know of the Enterprise. It is unclear when this takes place, however I do know that he ended up self destructing what was left of the saucer. Logic suggest it happens between the years of 2372-2380, as in 2380 he was promoted to captain and given command of the U.S.S. Titan, and he was Cmdr. when this happened.
All in all, the Enterprise's fate ended up a tragic one.
