Antenna Dilemma "jam post-mortem" : How it was supposed to be

We have made, Philip and I, Antenna Dilemma within two weeks.
I imagined all the story before the jam started (it was accepted by the jam rules :) ), so we had more time to focus on the dev, the music and the dialogs.
As you can guess, making a videogame in such a short time has some consequences and the game I expected to release the first day was quite different from our final release (but actually, not that much).

I’m going to tell you how the game was supposed to be and what we removed to be on track.

Locations

This is a fast drawing of all the locations I’ve made on the first day :

Most of the story didn’t change, I’ve just removed three locations because I didn’t have enough time to draw and I made them not mandatory.

  • A post guard was supposed to be on the right, after the antennas location. A cube should forbid our hero to leave the town. I’ve just removed this part of the game, but it will be in the polished version, the town seems quite empty with only 2 characters :).

  • The grocery story was supposed to be accessible. I’ve just moved the vending machine outside the store. I won’t change this part, I think it works nicely.

  • Another room with stairs was supposed to be inside the neighbour house. It was completly useless, I removed it.

The last colored locations were made in such a rush, I didn’t have time to insert the color version of the TV store. This is how I drew it :

You maybe also noticed that, when you play with Alfred, there is almost no decor description. Well, as you can guess, all of these scenes were finished just a couple of hours before the deadline….

Music

Philip made a couple of great songs, unfortunately, we didn’t add all of them to the game.

I used the same game engine that I’ve made with Inspector Waffles, and if you’ve played the last demo, you have maybe noticed it was only one song all along.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to make a real sound engine during the last days (finishing the story was the priority), so you get only one song (but it’s a good one so that’s fair! :) )

Puzzles

Opening a cash register to make some change shouldn’t be so easy :) I’ve created a puzzle to open it. But clearly, this was out of our planning, I needed a couple of days just to implement it.

Post Mortem

So here we go, Antenna Dilemma jam version has been out for almost two weeks now.
Even if it was not totally like we expected, even if some parts of the game were removed, I am happy with the result because it’s almost how I imagined it.

Our first task, when the jam will be fully over, will be to make a more polished version of Antenna Dilemma. And then, maybe make a chapter 2, who knows ? :)
