AUCN has never been fun for me to make. When you have to code 50+ animatronics, programming starts to get repetitive, it starts to feel empty, it starts to feel boring. But this was nothing compared to playing AUCN.
Playing AUCN was 5x worse. The game never felt like a game, instead it felt like you were trapped in hell and playing this game was your punishment(Yes, we made a game about hell feel like literal hell! Vote me for game dev of the year.). The nights themselves felt extremely boring (despite 20000 things going on at once.) and this made me personally not want to play the game at all.
I was getting excited, because I was programming the last character for the roster(It was XOR, due to them being the most complex). I was really excited for finishing with the roster and to begin working on things like the shop.(I just wanted to do something different because programming animatronics was a drag.) When I finally finished programming XOR(It took 3 hours to complete) I decided to play AUCN on 50/20 now that the full roster was complete. Something amazing happened.
I start the night, and I am greeted by Dee Dee singing “How Unfortunate.” I suddenly begin to black out and I hear Freddles calling in the distance, I jump to use my flashlight to get rid of the demons! I then notice my ventilation start to drop, I think to myself “Already?” as I go to check the left side of my screen. I see Twisted Freddy staring down at me, in a panic, I run to turn on my Silent Ventilation. My ventilation still needs resetting, so I open up my cameras and as I’m doing that I hear Dogfight shouting in the distance. I quickly reset my ventilation as I flip down my cameras to deal with Dogfight. Before I could do anything to defeat her, I hear banging in my vents. Nightmare Foxy. I quickly press W to close my front vent. Suddenly, I start to hear Ballora’s music playing in the background. I quickly rush to hit my door to lock her out, but when I pressed it all I heard was an error sound.
I forgot about Quarry.
Ballora jumpscares me and I see the game over screen with the time reading “0:08.0” I think to myself “Only 8 seconds… I could do MUCH better than that.”
And I tried.
Over and over.
For 3 hours.
Craziest part was, I was having a sh*t ton of fun doing it.
For the first time in as long as I can remember, I had fun playing AUCN. The curse had been lifted.
I’m now actually really excited to show you what I’ve done in the last 4 months, I think you all will be very pleased with my results.
It’s just not quite ready for a demo just yet…
There’s a little more I want to add.
I would mark Valentine’s day on your calendars if I were you.
