Hey all, just thought I would write this short article giving you an important gameplay-related update regarding Gooter.
As many of you might have heard, I finally added controller support to Gooter, which will be a part of the next update, 0.15.0. Because of this, I found a way to solve the keyboard/mouse problem that prevented me from putting a version of the game online. Also, my dad complained about no controller support, so he’ll be happy. All is well, right?
Unfortunately, there is a cost to allowing you to play Gooter using your controller. With the 0.15.0 update, you will no longer be able to pan the camera around like in 0.14.0
For those who are don’t know what I am talking about when I say “panning the camera around”, it’s basically the ability in the game to hold right-click and drag the mouse around in order to move the camera to look all around you.
While yes, this feature works well with keyboard controls, I don’t think I can think of a way to let you do it with a controller. Here are the reasons:
The camera system is not mine. I followed a tutorial from someone named “GameMakerStation - Matharoo”, which is why the camera is so smooth and nice. The system is written in GML, although I am not really good at it, so I couldn’t be able to build on the code. Note that I am not a coding kind of guy, and I use Drag and Drop to make most of the game.
I can’t really think of a way to have a control scheme where panning the camera would be comfortable for controller players.
Even if I could solve the previous two issues, the panning system is just something that I have found to be pretty unnecessary. Yeah, it’s a nice feature, but generally Gooter will be fine without it.
Now, that doesn’t mean I would never reimplement it, but I think it will generally be gone for the foreseeable future. I am removing this feature because I don’t want there to be a big advantage for keyboard players over controller.
I generally just want keyboarders and controller nerds to be as equal as possible and to enjoy the game without a big pro of one control option to make the other seem like the “bad” option.
I hope you all understand what I am trying to say here. Hopefully, I won’t have to make a decision like this again in the future, although only time will tell. Thank you!
