Hi to everyone out there who’s been involved with the #candyjam over the past week, and to everyone who’s checked out these weird little indie games popping up recently!
Before I say anything else I do want to say a massive thank you to everyone out there who’s checked out Candy Crusader and made my few days of not-doing-my-degree-and-doing-Unity-instead worthwhile! It’s really great to see so many people playing, rating, and commenting on Candy Crusader.
If you haven’t already done so, I would much appreciate it if you would give Candy Crusader a rate over at itch.io, where the Candy Jam is primarily being held.
But I don’t intend for the end of the Candy Jam to be the end of Candy Crusader. It’s fun to work on a game, and I’d like to polish things up a little bit. So what am I planning for Candy Crusader?
1. Stop people’s candy merging with the wall
In this version of the game, it seems like quite an issue that when you’re chasing after someone with candy, they’ll often end up pressed against a wall which their candy disappears into, never to be seen again. I’d like to put people’s candy on a sort of orbit around their body, so that if it hits a wall, it just moves around back into your view.
2. Make candies in corners easier to get
Similarly, if someone’s candy is pushed in a corner, no matter how much you run at it, you can’t get it. This is because the part of the player that picks up candies is in a spherical shape, so it can never quite hit those corners.
3. Add some more secrets to this level
Been inside the abandoned tower yet? There’s a few bits of candy hidden away there and a way near the top to get even more. Been round the back of the ramp near the start? I intend to try and stash away more and more ways to obtain pieces of candy that you might not notice just running around the square.
When I made Candy Crusader, I tried to focus on replayability and what my friend described as routing. I want people to try again to discover the best way to get around the level that’ll get you the most candies in the shortest amount of time. I want to add a few extra ways of getting candy that’ll give you more choices when making that decision - and different ways to try and obtain the top rank of CANDY CRUSADER.
4. Give the people some kind of model that isn’t a square
I’d very much like to do this. But, y’know, don’t hold your breath. 3D modelling seems difficult!
5. Add GameJolt trophies/achievements
This seems like a really cool feature of GameJolt and I’d love to get in on it. Not sure what they’d be for yet - I assume one for each rank, and perhaps extra ones for discovering secret locations or candies that I mentioned previously.
As for when I’ll be able to implement these changes… Who knows. But if and when they happen, you guys will be the first to know! Thanks again for playing - I hope you enjoyed Candy Crusader and the rest of the games that have been made in the #candyjam!
