Captains Concept Art

The art style of Scuffle Scoundrels was in the beginning defined by the platform it was originally made for, a baby carriage arcade. It was meant to portray an era of gaming where joysticks and buttons was a must!

However our intentions for Scuffle Scoundrels have grown since it was a one of a kind transportable arcade unit, and so our artistic ambitions have grown as well. From being a pixelated game with a 90s aesthetic, we want to bring it into the cartoony visual universe of Moped Games!

We are working with several ideas for pirate captains and soon we will be able to show you the result of our hard work, but until then we’d like to tell you a bit about the process, this week we take a look at concept designing.

First we explore our opportunities, what captains do we think are fun? Above you can see a selection of characters we think would be fun characters to play. We allow ourselves to become a bit crazy, for instance one of the ideas involves a crew of living cannonballs shooting themselves at other ships.

Another idea was to let each captain be a literal example of their Jolly Roger, ie. a lioness, a unicorn seahorse, a kraken and a sword wielding crab!

We also had ideas that was much more conventional, where captains were all human, but we felt we could express much more personality and fun action through the animals or the object-based captains.

Thank you for reading! Come back next week when we discuss fleshing out some of the characters.

Out of boredom and curiosity, I coded Sailor Jupiter's Argentine Backbreaker.
