Chandra is a God of Navgraha, or nine celestial bodies, which consists of Surya, the sun god as their king, and other seven planets.
Chandra is not only the God of Moon and Night, but he has authority over Wine, Masculinity, Stars, by extension Constellations and Fertility. He is also called Guardian of Amrita, the Nectar of Immortality, because he was the one who exposed Asura's plan of stealing the whole nectar from themselves, and many believe that the nectar is hidden on the moon itself. Amongst the Hindu Pantheon (with exception of Krishna, who married 16,000 princesses abducted by the Demon King Narakasura, just to give them to place to belong) he has largest number of consorts, goddesses personifying 28 lunar stations (the zodiac constellations the lunar orbit occupies) as his wives. He was cursed by his father in law, Daksha, for favouring his junior wives more than his eldest wife and Daksha's daughter, Rohini OR by Ganesha for laughing at him when he fell from his mount in a hurry to wax and wane. It is even believed to be unholy to even behold moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesha's annual festival. Just like Surya, the Sun God's golden chariot is pulled by seven flaming horses of reddish golden complexion, Chandra's white chariot is pulled by nimble antelopes of silverly white complexion.
