"This image made me go psychotic."
"I used to think it was bullshit-I mean... who wouldn't? It was a scam email from when I was 12 years old, but it's been stuck in my mind for so long. So... to give context about what I'm even talking about. My girlfriend Mary back in middle school fell for a Neopets scam for free paintbrushes (basically a cosmetic for your pet). Of course, our account got hacked since we used the same email. I was pretty bummed because... I spent a lot of time and money in that game. I was also pretty pissed at the same time because of Mary falling for such an obvious scam-it didn't even spell "Neopets" right..."
"Mary was so scared of... something, I'm not exactly sure. She didn't really understand hackers, so she probably thought that they might kill her or something, so she told her mom. Obviously-that led to her getting grounded for a week-mostly because her mom found out Mary used her credit card."
"She usually did daily checks on her email (basically obsessed with doing it), but since she was grounded, she couldn't do it. She asked me if I could do it for her for now, like the little nerd I was-I did it just to please her. About the 3rd day of her being grounded, I found an email sent to her spam from someone named 'The Redshift of Jehovah,' and the attachment was just 'SMILE!! GOD LOVES YOU!!' Despite the very energetic attachment, the JPEG image that was with it was everything but."
"The image was a photograph from the point of view of someone laying down in their bed. The room was dark and lifeless; the only light was from the dim TV, which glowed red. Looming over the footboard was a very... human-like Labradoodle. Usually, they were cute-but this one was different. Its head was tilted down, but its human-esque eyes stared into the picture-it almost felt personal. The dog looked old and dirty-like it had been neglected by someone or something. You couldn't tell what color the dog was because of the red light that shined onto him."
"I clicked away instantly when I saw it-I was scared shitless. I promised myself in my head that I'd never look at it again."
"Of course, that didn't happen. The next day I had completely forgotten what the image even looked like, so I got curious and went to check it again. Unsurprisingly, nothing changed, and I just ended up scaring myself again-but for some reason... this just kept happening. Every day I would forget what the image looked like, and curiosity got the best of me. I started to notice little differences-maybe the image got redder, maybe the dog looked angrier, maybe the dog wasn't even there."
"Eventually, I just forgot about it entirely... but it wasn't a slow forgetting; it was like a memory wipe. Everything that had happened just got erased from my mind-but how would I be writing this if I didn't know about it? I saw a post on Twitter from an account named @.unchidorobo-I only followed them for their cool art and myth stuff; I don't understand their language."
"The post was titled, 'Anyone remember Creepy.jpg? I remember seeing it constantly in my spam folder. Apparently, looking at this image will make you commit suicide. I usually only cover Japanese mythology, but this American myth was really interesting.' I remembered all of it now. I commented, 'Holy shit, I remember that. I saw it when my Neopets account got hacked.' A lot of people related-guess this really obvious scam was pretty mainstream."
"So I went back to that old email and saw the image again-but it wasn't correct. I don't remember much despite the fact I saw it what felt like literally today, but It was lower quality, but I felt like I could trace every detail. The Labradoodle had small hollowed eyes, nostrils where its nose had been, and small but long razor-sharp teeth that were dirty and bloody. The image was darker, but the dog was even more red. I stared at it for what felt like 3 seconds, but then I realized 3 weeks had passed when I checked the time. I was so confused and scared-how the fuck did three weeks already pass? Jesus christ, I looked at it for not even five seconds! I swear I started going crazy. I think I had a seizure at one point... but I don't even remember it. I started getting these thoughts that were from an 'alien god' language, yet I could understand them, even if this was my first time ever hearing them, it felt like god had spoken in my ear and burned my head. I understood them, yet I can't explain what they meant to you. I started seeing objects in this 4D and 2D like state, always glowing some shade of red or orange. I started getting these nauseating effects where light trails followed every moving thing, I threw up like ten times this week. Mary tried sending me to therapy, but I always kept begging no and shoving the doctors."
"They sent me to a mental hospital, understandably. Right now, I'm currently at home writing this. I'm starting to feel better. God bless."
