Day 131: Today it’s Monday. I’ve spent approximately 1048 hours on this project so far. I’m pretty sure that the total game time of all the players combined won’t go near that amount. That’s quite depressing. Also a similar observation can be made about this log. I’m pretty safe to say that 80% of it won’t be read by anyone other than me.
Daily interesting links:
Reddit post, person felt for a scam. That was somewhat interesting, so I thought I would share it.
Reddit post, difference between minimalist UI and lazy UI. Only the top comment gave some practical information.
Reddit pos, yet another post about GDC. Reading all that, I think that I’ll probably never go there. Networking is more pain than anything else for me. I’m pretty sure that if I went there I would just waste money.
Tasks done:
Looked around the “AFJV” it’s a group that promotes videogame and game dev in general. It’s the standard hub for any industry related stuff in France. I learned a lot of stuff. There were some interesting news. I won’t link them because it’s all in french. There, I found a recent job catalog. It reference the main game dev jobs and adds more details like salary observation (again just in France). Some jobs are really badly paid. Like just above the minimal salary. The range of salary for gameplay programming isn’t that attractive either. It’s between 27 k€ and 37 k€ with a median of 33k€. So for a junior position, I think I can make around 2000 euros per month. Now to rent a flat you need to make 3x time the rent. So that leaves me with a maximum of a 666 euros flat. Which in/around Paris is the price of a small one room apartment… In smaller cities though, it’s more than sufficient to live comfortably. Good thing I’m not doing this for money at all.
Did the enemies configuration for 63 rooms. I really wanted to make it to 75 rooms, but it was simply too painful. I don’t know how level designer can love that. Making content is so boring. I tried many things, but no, I simply can’t get to like it. Plus that’s when there’s the little voice saying it’s all useless. That I’m just wasting my time working on something that nobody will enjoy. And I still have 237 rooms left to do…
