Dev-log Note #1: 5th Anniversary and return of the project!


GREETINGS EVERYONE! I'm back here to gladly announce, that this shit is somehow still kicking wow! :0

Let's just cut to the chase I suppose!


Part I - Anniversary.

So yeah, its' in fact 5th anniversary of this project, I'm... quite surprised, not gonna lie. It's still funny to think back and remember how I was the one fully against this idea, and yet decided to roll with it to just help out a new, at that moment, friend... and now this shit is under my lead, I managed to gather some quite talented people to help me out, and glad to announce this is back! Although, there are some points to be made.

Part II - Rebranding

As some of you, close people, already know, the AU went through a lot of changes between indefinite hiatus/cancelation back at August 26th of 2022, at which, the same day, I got the full rights to AU, from being just a co-owner. The AU changed some ideas and even names several times. Had few reworks, rebrands, and many more. At some point there was even a collaboration work between me and Shaneli. Eventually, this all grew so ambitious, that we end up here... now this take is sort of... independent? It became a take on UNDERSWAP as a whole, and all Dust related stuff became rather, a bonus addition to it, like a canon spin off... so here I present you!

That's right, the name of the AU will be - ABOVETRUTH, a funny play on 'reversing' UNDERTALE, and yes, the name is even meaningful in the fact, that all the events take place on the flying island, instead of underground! Currently a doc about base AU itself is slowly, but surely in the works, so I suppose I could share info about it here too. Especially if it'll be relevant (which is most likely lol) to this thing in general.

Some general designs are already done in one shape or form already, including - Chara, our protagonist. Tem, Sans, Papyrus, Temmie, Muffet and Undyne.

As well as Conceptual idea: of Amalgams, 'Gaster', River Person, Dreemurrs, Alphys... and that's if I'm not forgetting anyone.

Also, should be worth mentioning, that I went as far, to change the visual part of battle system! Practically, it stays majorly same, I suppose. As most of revisions do lol. But it has some open space for fun here and there. Some things already being played around with :p

Although, again, some things are WIP/placeholders, and things might look slightly different in the end. But majorly idea is there and done. More over, currently being coded! So we'll have a chance to actually see it in action!

Then. As you can see, the name went to a shorter and simpler 'ENDGAME'. Originally, it was supposed to be a name for either one of old collaboration spin offs, and later, as one of old 'eras'. Yet, eventually it was decided to keep it as main one instead.

Visuals... well. As for art style, or sprite style to be exact, it's still slightly debated, as I'm torn between two main ideas. We'll see what I'll go with, maybe even find some 'hybrid solution'.

As to regarding 'dusttrust' part of it, it's still in it's core uses Pre-leak, original DUSTBELIEF comic and some hints from old Swap!Dustbelief, so the design for Sans is mostly kept around the same. At least main one. Of course it's been slightly touched up, refreshed here and there, but I decided to stay true to my old idea, even if by now it's been overdone perhaps by many. Although, Sans' design, or better said, appearance, changes through out the events of story, the coat one considered the 'main one'. Or the face of this take. While the design haven't been fully finalized and can still have some slight changes, and the reference art needs to be still finished. Have a 'sneak peak' I suppose...

Here's the main design. At least as of now, currently. Still debating on some stuff, mostly weapon wise. But other than that I'm happy with tweaked version of it! The regular Swap Sans thing is in works meanwhile... I'll keep ya'll tuned.


Part III - Future of this project

So... This part of topic been quite tricky for a while. All this time I wanted to keep the idea of game, but slowly and surely I burnt out. Loosing all motivation, and only recently coming to the idea and realization, that if I want this out in any way, and not just dead or cancelled, I might cease the idea... so the plan was to have a fake trailer (which we failed to make in time miserably, only few of assets been done :'D) + OST with mockups on soundcloud... WHICH IS BACK, WITH LEGACY OST AS WELL (old shit been there like for 9 months by now)

as of now, as we 'speak' (or well, you're reading this), WHOLE 12 TRACKS Related to new OST have been published, including releasing 1 more scrapped concept + 11 new tracks, from all around early events, from prologue, to Pinefall (Snowdin), here's few examples I suppose!

Music:

Going forward. This was my plan for a while. Plenty of OST has been done. Chapter 1 and 2 practically almost done. Prologue, at least the old terms wise, almost done too, practically all that is left is some smaller themes and main battle thing. But that's for later... Although lately the prologue has been vastly expanded, so... yeah, it needs more work, but nothing too much, at least music wise!


Game plans:

as I said, as of lately, all the possible game plans were practically put into "eh maybe one day? I doubt it". BUT, thanks to addition of WONDERFUL musician to the team, and now by extension CODER - @cassdudette (who I'm infinitely grateful to have here!) GAVE ME BACK TO DO THIS AS A GAME.

So as of now, can't actually promise you anything, especially due to IRL circumstances. But thanks to Cassy, at least it's pretty likely to have anything playable at all! So again, stay tuned for that as well!

Originally game was planned to be made on Gamemaker 2, but recently we switched to Godot. (That's the reason SwapFell was moved too btw. And that's why Cassy can help me in the first place lmao-), so there's that. For now Cassy works on battle part of it, and I'm really slowly trying my way for overworld parts of it. Not much to show as of now, but I'll show anything as of interest further!


Part IV - Bonus Stuff

As of now, as I stated, currently, ABOVETRUTH doc is at works. OST is related to all parts - Swap, 'dusttale' scenario and 'dustbelief' ones. Art stuff, mostly designs, slowly but surely will be made too. Maybe some playable concepts too. And most likely the dust Papyrus ask will be back! So... I guess stay tuned for that too!

On this note, I guess I'm heading out. The page, is sadly too work in progress, didn't manage to finish all I wanted, but oh well! We'll see eventually. Hope you can find this as fun as I do. Stay safe, peace out!
