DevLog 1: Fractured Empire In Development

I recently released my first game through gamejolt, ping pong panic, feeling that it would be appropriate to start my journey in the world of game development in the same fashion that many before me have done, by making a pong clone (yawn!). Several weeks of headaches and late nights ensued, my persistance eventually being rewarded with something resembling a complete game that I excitedly rushed to distribute.

The end result of my hasty development cycle was a further several weeks of uploading to gamjolt, finding annoying bugs, taking down the game and then reuploading a patched version. Mistakes were made and lessons were learned.

Having this new experience behind me has encouraged me to pursue a more challenging project. So I introduce to you… Fractured Empire! (Name subject to change). Armed with my new knowledge of the unity game engine, my latest project will be a 3D top down space shooter that drops players into large space battles featuring a range of ship classes, weapons and more!

While Im not quite ready to spill the beans on specific gameplay elements just yet, you can expect some intense top down shooter action with strategy elements thrown in for good measure!

Development is just beginning so aspects of the game might (most probably will) change later on. So far this week I’ve added some very basic models and functionality to the game. These include a few planets (fully textured with normal maps) that slowly rotate in the background of the battlefield and a simple spaceship model complete with a simple script that allows keyboard input to fly it around and shoot lasers. I’ll be posting updates every week so stay tuned if you want to know more.
