Devlog 2 - February 2020

Happy February! Gonna summarize the past month and then show off some spells! Feel free to skip down if you only care about the cool spells.

My January was sort of all over the place. I worked a lot on this game in December to prep for this devlog launch, but I kind of faltered a little after and didn't get a lot done in January. The last week has been very productive though! I trimmed down a lot of mechanics again to reduce new player confusion, and I think it's paid off. It's very easy to jump right into the game now, but it still gets amazingly complex (and fun) once you get into the thick of it. It's been very fun to develop.

Okay! Onto spells! In the screenshot above, I've found myself inside a shop! There are 3 shops per zone (more on zones in a future devlog) and 3 spells for sale in each shop. 9 Till Void is all about collecting cool spells, so lets see what these three spells do:

Twister is a spell that lets you swap places with any enemy on the level and then attack it for 3 damage. It's important to remember that in 9 Till Void you can only cast the spell that shares a row with your character. So if you're at the very bottom of the level, but you need to cast a spell at the top of the level, it can be hard to cross that gap quickly. Twister is a little awkward, but it can get you places very efficiently.

On the topic of only being able to cast the spell that shares a row with you, illusion lets you cheat that rule!

99 damage!!! I think the average health on an enemy is 3 or 4, but there's definitely a few outlier enemies that have way more than 4 health. This does cost an action, and you only get 1 action per turn by default. Since you have to be next to the enemy to use this, that means whoever you curse is gonna get one last chance to attack you. This is a blue spell, which means it's an uncommon spell and costs a little more to purchase than the common white spells. There's also rare spells, but I won't spoil any of those for now.

That's all I have to share for now! If you have any questions about the game, please ask! I will try my best to answer all questions to the best of my ability, so don't be shy!

See you in March!

I'm currently making a Tetris + Mahjong hybrid game called #Nojong. Match colored blocks in the field to make clears. After a number of clears, the blocks left in your hand are scored, so you want to try and keep triples and quadruples in your hand.

Wonder if anyone can guess what kinda game I'm working on right now with this GameJolt session data as the only clue. I bet someone can sleuth it out!
