Hey, 7494pinguisback20 here, and i made popper penguin in a vengeful night.
In this little devlog commentary i will discuss some things like how this game came to be, how i made the characters and so on.
First of all, we have the birth of the game. One of my roblox friends found this game called “jester jasper in : jiving for a jumpscare”, and it turns out that it’s pretty much a good game. However, the more I looked at it, the more I thought :
“hey! Why not make something like this?”
So, i began designing the building that the game takes place in, and the gameplay that will be based off of jester jasper, but with a little bit of originality in them.
After that, i began designing the enemies. The first enemy i made was larry, the armless being. After i made larry, i decided to program the main antagonist of the game, but it was a prototype of popper, known as flippy the fish. I wanted him to be a personified fish, but it was too hard for me, so i went with a penguin instead.
I first wanted a golden freddy enemy in the game, but after i thought of that shark named “eidolic”, i ran out of ideas, so i scrapped the enemy.
After designing the characters, i found out that I somehow went beyond how many characters jester jasper had by only one. Only 4 to 3.
Now for how i made the characters.
Larry the armless being was based off of champ and chump, the two enemies that would’ve appeared in OWAF. It may seem silly to you, but i got their designs from fnaflore.com, which has it’s flumpty page, so if you haven’t seen the website, go check it out.
Popper penguin was based off of pingu from the show of the same name. I watched a couple of episodes of it when i was little, and i loved his iconic “noot noot”, and the clay-motion animation. A few years later, i imagined him being somewhat of an enemy in the game, but as a different character, so bam, he made it in.
Puppisaur is kind of an original character, as i mixed a dinosaur with a sesame street puppet. So I made a joke about it in a teaser where he asks if he’s a puppet or a dinosaur.
I pretty much got the inspiration of hourglass from RED from the godzilla NES creepypasta, and hourglass from five nights at treasure island. As soon as i saw that FNATI character (and how many times he got cut from the game), I thought about what to do with him. I had two choices, make a joke project on scratch about ranting on the issue, GradeAunderA style, or say goodbye to him and hope that he will see the light of day in one way or another. Then a thought came :
“Hey, why not put him in MY game? That way he won’t be scrapped too many fucking times!”
So, with that said, i put him in my game, but instead of keeping his design, i changed it up a little to something a tad different. He is like the redman of the game, but colored in green.
Now for the scrapped ideas.
There was going to be a plushie with blue hair, a white head, orange eyes and a yellow shirt with a “B” on it on the front view of the building. The plushie’s name was going to be “boopie”, but i scrapped it due to ownership issues. The character was originally owned by waltman13, a friend of mine on twitter who has a comic series called “phillo and greyeen”, where boopie is one of the characters. I loved the character enough to put him in the game, but when i showed the version of her plush counterpart in the office, he wanted me to remove her. So, i made a placeholder known as “pooky”, the little ball with the sphere-y nose. To this day, we will remember the plushie from the scrapped ideas section of the extras menu.
I never knew my game was going to attract dungeonation’s attention, i mean, that’s special. Normally, I just reach an audience that’s a bit small, but i never expected THAT much of attention from the past days. If you reallly want another one of these in the future, then i’d appreciate it. It would be so nice of you guys.
