For the past week and a half, you may have noticed that DF CONNECTED, among other games that use GMServer, have been experiencing frequent outages.
Unfortunately, we can confirm that these outages are due to ongoing DDoS attacks targeting GMServer, orchestrated by an outside attacker.
If you aren't familiar with the term, then a DDoS attack (short for "Distributed Denial of Service") is a type of cyber-attack which aims to severely disrupt an online service by flooding the bandwidth/resources of a targeted system.
During a DDoS attack, any players that are online can get disconnected from the game without warning, and players who try to login or register are unable to do so.
Sadly, this isn't the first time that we've had issues with DDoS attacks. It's discouraging to know that there are still individuals out there willing to do all of this for the purpose of putting down others.
At the time of writing, GMServer is currently unavailable as a result of the attacks. Any games that use GMServer to power their online multiplayer, including DF CONNECTED, cannot be played online. For now, we have no choice but to wait for the server to come back on.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage, and we will continue to update you when we can.
What happens next?
In a few days, we plan on posting a new Mini Status Update. If all goes well, then a new patch for the game, v2.7.11, is anticipated to be released alongside it.
This patch aims to make some improvements to the reconnect feature that was introduced in v2.7.10. Most notably, it will become possible to continue playing the game offline while waiting for the game to reconnect.
This means that even during an outage, you can continue to explore and encounter enemies like usual, enabling you to keep making progress while you wait to reconnect. As long as you reconnect to the server again afterwards, you can keep any progress that you made during the outage!
Although this change doesn't prevent the outages from causing disruption, it can at least help to minimize their impact by making it possible to play through them.
Please keep an eye out for the upcoming Mini Status Update to get notified when v2.7.11 releases. In that post, we'll also provide more information on our plans for the future of DF's multiplayer, so please give it a read if you're interested.
Well, that's all for now. Thank you all so much for your continued patience and support.
