Dredex Devlog 7/21/18 Combat Animation process

How’s it going everyone! Dredex here, artist and animator for Wenches and Loot. On the last devlog I was able to introduce myself and talk about a couple of animations that I worked on for the project. There’s a lot that we’re adding to the game which will make gameplay a lot more fun for our players especially when it comes down to the combat system that we implemented.

I mostly have been working on Jack’s combo animations for the combat system since we’re looking for a more fast pace fighting, also i worked on Jack’s dodge roll animation that you can use while you evade oncoming enemy attacks, and I’ve just been polishing up a couple of animations of Jack’s cape such as his run, idle and his duck just to give Jack’s cape a much more fluid look.

Coming up with idea’s for combo’s was really fun to do with the team because we all have brilliant ideas we had in mind and everytime we would meet in the morning to work on our project we would always have breakfast tacos and with those wrapped breakfast taco’s we would sometimes use them as our sword props to see what kind of stance Jack can use for his melee attacks. FEAR THE TACO SWORD!

After nailing down the stances that we like for Jack, I then have to draw out each stance in a different frame for Jack and that’s when things get a little complicated at times since the animation will not always be perfect. There’s a lot of trial and errors that I go through in order to get a solid animation down for Jack. The process itself for Jack’s animation can take up to about week for me to finish and have it perfect and flushed out to Switch Caliber standards. Just like our company slogan, “No Compromise”, I’ll make sure to have the best animations out here for Wenches Loot and no animations that’ll disappoint you guys!

Here’s a quick video that I recorded myself drawing the first frame of Jack’s dodge roll. We didnt use this as his final dodge roll but I just wanted to show you guys the process of me sketching out Jack in his diving stance and since speed drawings are always fun to watch lol. Here’s a link below to the YouTube video of the speed drawing.

Below is the final animation strip of when Jack dodge rolls. I had alot of trial and error but i was able to nail Jack’s dodge roll so in game it’ll look sexy. Alot of hard work is going into the game so we’ll keep updating you guys with more info and hopefully have a gameplay video up soon!

Take care everyone, till next time
