Hey guys! We’ve just recently hit 40,000 views, and 15,000 plays!
This is absolutely insane, and there really are more comments, questions and videos then we can even keep up with anymore. This makes us super happy that everyone likes Determination so much, but it also makes us really sad that we can’t keep up with everyone as well as we did when we started.
We’re super happy that all of you are so interested and have so many questions about Determination, but we have been receiving a lot of the same questions over and over, and so I thought it would be a good idea to write this news post and add a FAQ, with all the most common questions. I will edit this post and keep it up to date as time goes on!
Q:
How did you make this?
A:
We made it using C#, OpenGL, Spine, Gimp, and Anime Studio.
We didn’t use an engine like gamemaker, or Unity, we wrote all of our own code, except for the libraries for which we’ve included license files inside the zip we provided.
Q:
How long did this take to make?
A:
It took us around 4 months to create the first version of Determination we released, however it is now almost a month later and we are still working on it, so that’s something to consider too.
Q:
I’ve played more UNDERTALE , but it hasn’t changed in Determination, how do I make Determination reflect the progress I’ve made in UNDERTALE ?
A:
Use the handy reset button inside Determination! That will update Determination to the progress you’ve made in UNDERTALE .
Q:
How do I get to <x> secret character?
A:
I had no idea there where secret characters.
I think some of the people in the comments are playing a joke on you. :D
Q:
Is this mod based on Camila Cuevas animation?
A:
100% No. We had never seen her animation when we released Determination. We saw it for the first time not long after she streamed our game.
The reason the heart is empty in Determination has nothing to do with a lack of determination, and is entirely because the player sells their soul at the end of a genocide route. So the heart is empty to represent the players lack of a soul.
We actually got our inspiration for our game from an entirely different animation by Ryou, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmIDkiFO4vg
Which is why we credit that video in our description!
Q:
Can you make <x> UNDERTALE mod / <x> UNDERTALE fan game needs some help, will you step in to help them / Will you be working on more UNDERTALE or other fan games once you finish Determination?
A:
Most likely, not. Determination has a LOT of potential, in terms of extra content that we wanted to add, but don’t have time to fully explore. What is more likely is that in the future Determination will reach a state where we are happy with it, and then we will move on to making our own games.
Q:
Why did you make Determination?
A:
It started out as just as an outlet for me designing my own custom engine, I wanted to build myself an engine I could use for my own projects, Determination allowed me to do that and experiment with ideas along the way. We never expected to finish it, or that anyone would ever care if we did!
Q:
What does Toby Fox think of Determination?
A:
It’s not entirely clear, he didn’t say anything directly, but he seemed pretty cool about it, he’s a chill dude. I’m sure if he had issues with Determination he would let us know, and we would take it down, no questions asked.
Q:
Is Determination finished / content complete?
A:
Yes.
Q:
I’ve been wanting to make a game, but don’t know how. Can you please make a tutorial on how to do it?
A:
That’s amazing, and I’d love to help, however..
Since I write my engines myself, and what I know I’ve learned through years and years of research and experimentation, I can’t simply make a tutorial, because unfortunately it isn’t simple and I’m not a very good teacher.
However, you’re in luck! There are lots and lots of resources online to help get you started. I taught myself from things I found online.
Here are some quick suggestions:
1) Pick a programming language (I suggest java to start with), and buy a book, or study a free tutorial online about your language.
2) Find an online community that either deals with game development or specializes in your chosen language, they will be much better than me at helping you to learn to be better!
3) Stay Determined! Learning to make games is HARD. And learning to be good at it takes YEARS. I still feel as if I’m not very good at it, and I have lots to learn! That’s why Determination exists in the first place!
Q:
I have more questions! How can I get hold of you?
A:
You can either post a comment (we answer as many questions as we can), or you can join our discord server, which you can find linked on our gamejolt page. We and some of our friends are usually around and willing to answer any questions you may have.
Q:
Are you going to make a mac/phone/toaster version?
A:
We would love to be able to do this, but unfortunately, we just don’t have the resources. We wrote our own engine, so porting is not a simple process, additionally, we do not own the necessary hardware/software to make a mac version. And even if we did have the resources, we just don’t have the time.
Q:
Will you be translating it into <my native language>?
A:
Being the Englanders that we are, we only speak English; and so we are unable to translate it ourselves. Even if we were provided with the correct translations, translating it would not be an easy task, due to the many control characters we use for speed, and colour effects on text. What this means is that in order to make sure the speed and colour effects work correctly, we would need to understand the translations we were given, so we could effect the text in appropriate ways (as we do with the English version). So unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen for Determination. (unless some c# programmer who knows another language volunteers to do it for us)
That’s all for now guys!
