• Game
The King of Fighters '94, the very first entry of the KOF franchise which would later become popular to the point it would become the rival franchise of Street Fighter. The game itself introduces a brand new battle system that consists of 3 vs. 3 Team Battles, which have you select a team of 3 characters to use in order to fight against 3 opponents.
The better version of the game is KOF '94 Rebout, a PS2-exclusive version of KOF '94 made to celebrate the game's 10th anniversary. Not only it includes balance changes and an arranged soundtrack, but it also includes more detailed sprites made from scratch, 3D backgrounds and also Saisyu Kusanagi, Kyo's father as a new playable character.
• Story (Takes place after Art of Fighting 2)
It's 1994. Yet another King of Fighters tournament is organized, and many fighters (in groups of 3 from across) the world get invited, the organizer sent around 24 invitations... but if it isn't Geese, nor is it Krauser, who is the organizer? Rugal Bernstein, an infuential black market weapons and drugs dealer who has been bored of the competition. The canon way to play the game is by selecting the Japan Team, composed by the fighters Kyo Kusanagi, Benimaru Nikaido and Goro Daimon.
• Gameplay (pretty much)
The game is essentially a prototype of what would games like KOF '96 be played like, so instead of being able to run and do super jumps, you can barely get to dash and evade. You get to choose between ~9 predefined teams (so no picking characters separately) and choose the order they will go into battle if the first character dies (you can't switch between then mid-battle). The Desperation meter gets filled manually by pressing LP, LK and HP. There's no combo system besides pressing LP/LK consecutively for some characters.
• Gameplan (Japan Team only)
--- Kyo Kusanagi
The first iteration of the protagonist of KOF was definitely a shoto. He has a ground-only "fireball", a DP (Rising anti-air punch) and a rising kick barrage. He is easy to combo with and his Desperation Move is a wall of fire in front of him.
--- Benimaru Nikaido
The blonde Polnareff is pretty simple to use and definitely a close to mid-range character. His Shinku Katate Goma is a sweep that covers both your front and back, very useful against cross-ups, he has an air drill kick and his Raijinken is a strong front punch with a decent range and he also has this quick kick idk what's the name but it works as a solid combo finisher. His Desperation Move is a stronger Raijinken
--- Goro Daimon
Grappler with 2 command grabs and a special that makes the ground tremble, having your opponent in knockdown and with a bunch of damage dealt unless they jump (which they can and will do). His Desperation Move is a stronger command grab.
