Wow, there’s been a lot of Five Nights games, eh? Over 2,000 on Game Jolt if you’re wondering.
It has become this weird phenomenon that spurred from Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s series. It’s an accessible enough game for many—many many—devs at different experience levels to try their hand at recreating the concept through fangames.
The inspirational and motivational outcome is pretty cool, and I’m glad Game Jolt can be a host to such things. However, the sheer number of games have overwhelmed the newly added games listing into Game Jolt: FNAF Edition, making it challenging to discover other new games.
I’ve taken time out of the development of #GameJoltNext to improve the tagging system. I believe I have implemented a solution that appeals to the FNAF crowd and also to those of you who enjoy finding interesting and unique games that are not tailored around Mr. Faz.
We now require FNAF related games to be tagged with the #fnaf hashtag in the game description. I made it so mods can override and add tags manually to ensure games are tagged appropriately.
With the correct tag in place, all FNAF themed games will only show up in a highly visible spot on the homepage. This incentive to tag FNAF fangames will relieve the newly added listing, making it easier to browse through.
I wanted to come up with an inclusive solution for everyone, removing all FNAF fangames would have been the easy way out. Let’s keep in mind that Game Jolt is an open platform. I work hard to keep it that way. Anything I do to the site will be around allowing nearly any game to be uploaded. I refuse to reject games just because I personally don’t want to see them. However, as the site grows to attract a larger audience it has to evolve to cater to the new ways that people use it.
I imagine it will take some time before people get used to tagging their games as #fnaf. We’ll continue to go through the newly added periodically to ensure they get tagged. In the meantime, let me know what you think.
