FNaC Speculation: Is "Mike Schmidt" Mary's husband or brother?

When it comes to FNaC, its connections to FNaF itself is pretty limited. Besides a newspaper article detailing the closure of FNaF 2's location in the first FNaC game, and a secret mini-game depicting Mary visiting that same Freddy's location, FNaF doesn't have to much of a presence. Well, besides the fact that Mary shares the same last name with the FNaF 1 night guard. And that's the topic of discussion today.

The relationship that Mary and Mike share isn't something we really know. They share the same last name, worked a night shift at a questionable establishment for children, and their names are both four letters long and start with 'M'. They clearly have some connection to each other, but since Mary's story has concluded, we probably won't get answers in the FNaC games. (Unless Evergreen decides to shed some light by exploring FNaF 1.)

However, there is some tidbits of info in the games that points to what relationship these two might have. So, let's delve into that and see if we can figure this out.

We know for a fact that Mary Schmidt has a brother.

In FNaC 3's opening 'cutscene', Mary has a talk with a therapist about Rat & Cat. This therapy session first came about from her brother being attacked by Rat in the new location that opened up. This right here straight up confirms that Mary has a brother. The fact that we know she has a brother, who like her, has had a deadly encounter with an animatronic, points to Mike being that brother.

How exactly? Well, think about it. Mary had a pretty deep trauma of Rat & Cat, and while she managed to conquer it, many years later she would end up working at Rowboatics Corps' factory. Where as we all know, she falls asleep on the job, allowing for a devious duo to kill some twins that go on to possess Candy and Cindy. This no doubt would have reopened that trauma of hers, especially since Tragedy Puppet/Vinnie begins appearing in the first game as a hallucination. This trauma being reopened probably is what led to her applying at Candy's, to try and confront it again.

This I think is the case for Mike too. Having been attacked by an animatronic himself, would cause his own trauma to form. And while it took quite a bit longer for him to confront it, he ended up doing the same thing as Mary; Getting a job at a establishment that houses animatronics for children.

Then of course, there's the fact that from a narrative standpoint it would make sense to have Mike be Mary's brother. They share the same last name and have the same literal job for a time. Really, it makes sense for them to be blood related.

But, of course, we have the other side of the argument. So let's go ahead and start on that now.

Mary has a daughter and she was born in the 90's.

In FNaC 2, we take on the role of Mary's daughter, Marylin Schmidt. In terms of Marylin's role in the story, she doesn't really have one. She's kind of just there for some reason. But, the fact that she does exist is pretty important in this discussion. You see, Marylin is 17 years old, a crazed teen going off to do stupid things that'll likely get them killed. The usual, you know?

What's important here though is that she's 17 in the year 2007, when FNaC 2 takes place. That means that she was born in 1990. Which means that Mary had to have had a partner before that year. Sure, theoretically she could have had a partner that year, but I don't think that's likely. Anyway, Mary was working at Candy's in 1987 and before that at Rowboatics. I said previously that she worked at Candy's to deal with her trauma resurfacing. I still think that's the case personally, so let's say that she got married a year later in 1988. To whom? Literally the only other person we know in this universe that has the same last name: Mike Schmidt. That then leads to Marylin being born in 1990.

Mary though lost her job at Candy's, so she's jobless now. And with a new baby in their hands, they need money. Input Mike Schmidt, her husband, who gets a job at Freddy's to help with money problems. (Why a job at Freddy's of all places to help feed your child is beyond me but whatever.)

When it comes to this side of the argument, there isn't to much to it. Marylin existing is basically the only evidence of Mike being Mary's husband. I suppose this could be a way for Emil to make these two connected, by making a child exist that shares their last name. But, to be honest, I do lean more towards the brother side of this debate.

That about wraps it up for this rambling of speculation. Honestly, probably not one of my better ramblings. But hey, it's something to discuss, right? In the end though, there's still no direct confirmation of which it is. Just pieces to speculate on and come up with our own headcanon.

So, which one do you folks believe in? Feel free to give your thoughts.

I somehow got lucky enough to encounter each "Gilded" character in the forests, save for the Dead forest.

Now if only I could get this lucky with getting the damn foil cards.

The arcade cabinets we've seen for the reboot are for all the characters in the building, not just Popgoes. The other three arcades are named; 'Stone's Big Adventure', 'Blake's Repair Shop', and while it's hard to make out fully, 'Squirrel Skaters!'.

I recreated the paper pal versions of Popgoes and Bonnie. A bit shoddy, but I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

Happy 10th birthday to Candy the Cat!

Candy's initial model was shared by @Emilmacko on Reddit on the 22nd of November 2014, 10 years ago today. Arguably the most influential FNAF fan character ever. It is an honour to share a universe with him!

The final badge is mine! Spent nearly $10 getting it, but I did it.

Now I just need to get lucky and get the foil cards via the booster packs. (Assuming they can appear in those)

Now give me funny stickers

I know it was probably created to make the outside not so barren, but I do wonder what the building across the street could be.
