Game Idea: An open world, FPS game with an art style/direction to old 1950-1960's Dick Tracy comics, with sort of a "Into the Spider-verse" esc look to it, with an overarching story of finding your wife's killer, and slaughtering the Mafia family whose responsible, or, simply busting the operations and playing sort of a passive-vengeance.
Gameplay: As said, it's an FPS-RPG game with an emphasis on stealth and movement, with the goal to be what you want it to be based how you put your skill points. Want the game to be a Boom-Shoot? Pick up a shotgun, put your points in speed and damage and kill everything! Want the game to be a calmer, yet exciting experience where you sneak past each guard and win through intimidation? Put your points into Stealth and Speech! The only limit is the game dev's energy, budget, and imagination.
Art Style: While 2D boom shoots styled off of a 20th century comic/cartoon exist, they fail in being more then pure boom shoots, which is fine! But something that limits what the developer can do is the art style and color pallet. With a game such as this, you could use solid, yet shaded colors to appeal to the comic-like ascetic, and lean into it's darker tone. As previously stated the game could be rendered in a comic-like filter, what I mean by that is for example, in Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse, you can tell each frame is stylized to look like a cell of a comic book. I was thinking something similar could be done with the games art, with a filter used to make it look like a comic.
Setting: The setting could be set sometime in the 1920's to the 1950's. Any higher or lower and the technology of the time could get too/less advanced for a logical story. The game would widely take place in a New York or L.A. city scape, wide enough to be good for mobility yet cramped enough for stealth.
Lore and Character: You would play as a detective who has his mind set on one case, finding who killed his wife. Now as previously stated it could be a mafia family, but it doesn't have to be, it could be something else but my mind is stuck on a mafia family. We go through most of the game without seeing the protagonists face, yet hearing his voice vaguely so the player doesn't feel stuck to one person yet can still connect on a mental level. This also adds a level of mystery to our own protagonist for people to question and find clues along the way as they play. Other then their name, what their good at skill wise is completely up to you.
Gameplay: Gameplay could be split up into these separate sections.
Shooting- Like any FPS game, you can shoot to your heart's content, putting points into combat based skills to just blast through the game at high efficiency with a movement style such as "Karlson" or "Ultrakill".
RPG- Talking more your style? More a fan of numbers then explosions? That's fine! In the game there could be a (previously mentioned) points system or skill tree, allowing you to get better at certain things and create your character how you want. Gain powerful perks for being evil, receive heavy rewards for being good, and get generally positive perks for just sitting in the middle. Whether you're a God with guns, Insatiable with Intimidation, or a Sucker for Speech, you can do it with a RPG style such as "FALLOUT" and "Payday 2".
Interrogation- Want some juicy LoRe? Well guess what! This is how (somewhat)! Through an almost dating-game (Yes, dating game) like dialog system, you can persuade or intimidate crooks into giving you crucial information. Whether it be desk and lamp or gun and rooftop, you can make those who you want to spill their guts do just that, by trying to balance between different emotional stats (Depending on who you're talking to or qhat info you want) and say the right things to get what you want!
Music Style: Music, while not sounding difficult for a game like this, can be very difficult to make. Of course we could use every "LoungeMusic.mp3" file in existence for inspiration, but that isn't the kind of vibe I envision for the game. The best examples of musical vibes I can give for what kind of game this would be is "Quarto De Hotel" for non-combat or audience music, and "If God Didn't Want Us To Snort Worms, He Wouldn't Have Made Them Cylindrical!" For combat oriented moments.
Inspiration: "MOUSE P.I. for Hire", "Fallen Aces", "Dick Tracy issue(s) 1-3", "Mafia 1&2", "The Godfather part 1&2", "Skullgirls", "Spider-man into the Spider-Verse", "Payday 2", "FALLOUT", "Red Dead Redemption 2", "Goodfellas".
