A giantess world is a fantasy world of mythical or fictional females who are larger than normal. The term can also be applied to a human woman of exceptional height due to medical or genetic abnormalities (see gigantism). The concept of a giantess is often associated with feminist themes, especially when combined with the idea of female empowerment.
Giantesses have appeared in many comic books and films. In the Marvel Universe, size-changing heroines like Tara and Garganta combine beauty and strength, winning over fans from both genders. Conversely, giantess villainesses like the Jade Giantess use their immense strength and beauty for nefarious purposes. Giantesses have also appeared in other mediums, including anime and manga.
The 1958 B-movie Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was an early example of a film that utilized a theme of giantesses to promote a female empowerment message. The film parodied earlier size-changing films, such as The Incredible Shrinking Man and 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock.
Other film and television characters with giantess features include Hela, the queen of the afterlife realm of Hel in Norse mythology. She is a half-goddess and jotunn, daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda and sister to Fenrir the wolf and Jormungandr the World Serpent.
Giantesses have also appeared in many cartoons and TV shows, including Genie in the House, Snorks, Jackie Chan Adventures, Braceface, Schoolhouse Rock, The Muppet Show, Totally Spies!, Animaniacs and Futurama. In the cartoon show Dexter's Laboratory, a character called Tina Fey transforms into a gigantic giantess when she drinks a magic potion.
