• Game
Similar to Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting was directed by the creator of the very first Street Fighter, with him previously considering this as a "sequel" to it. This game was revolutionary in the sense that it would introduce brand new mechanics into fighting games, these being Dashes, Taunts and most importantly, Super Moves. This was one of SNK's greatest hits that would later lead characters from AOF to join the King of Fighters roster, having Ryo, Robert and Yuri as the team representing Mexico, along with other characters like King, Mr. Big and Mr. Karate, the ladder which who (spoilers!!)...
would later be revealed in AOF2 that he's the father of Ryo and Yuri
You only play the story mode as Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia, but the SNES version of this game allows you to play as the rest of the characters freely.
• Story
Happening before Fatal Fury, Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia are 2 friends that are practitioners of the Kyokugenryu Karate and that one day they found out Ryo's sister Yuri Sakazaki was missing, and now they're off to look for her throughout the city.
• Pretty much the gameplay and mechanics
First of all, throughout the Story Mode, you will encounter Bonus Levels that have you selecting between 3 minigames that, if beaten, can make you gain certain things (+ Spirit, + Strength and access to the character's Super Desperation Move).
This one is slightly more complex that your average fighting game. It's a 1v1 2D fighting game with its weird hitbox shenanigans, sure, but there's a huge emphasis on Super Moves (which here they are called Desperation Moves) as you WILL require to use them throughout the game if you want to win.
The gimmick with the Desperation Moves is that all of your specials and supers require a certain meter (Spirit) which you have to fill manually by charging, but you can also remove part of your opponent's Spirit by taunting which has a dedicated button to it (without counting Taunts, the game is essentially a 3-Buttons game
Similar to Fatal Fury, the game has busted damage to make the matches end pretty quick, and the CPU can be annoying at first, but if you ever get to find out they follow specific yet pretty simple patterns which can make them more predictable and easier to deal with. See the following example!

If you were to perform Ryo's Super Desperation Move (Haoh-Sho-Ko-Ken) against Mr. Karate while he's able to, he will counter it with his own.
• Character Gameplans: The only characters you will care about is Ryo and Robert, and they both have the same moveset with barely any notable differences outside of the visual part, so feel free to select the one you find cooler to play as!
