A [Hip-] TEASER FROM [The Classics You've Come to Expect! circa 1997]

Okay, so in this first screenshot at the start of the game, Mario's sprite, presumably MX, doesn't have the buttons on his overalls, but later in the game when he transforms, they return. Is there an explanation for this or am I just thinking too much?
