Hi everyone
So you may be wondering how Lazer Horn became Colour Tanks… well here is how!
Chapter 1 - The origin of Lazer Horn
After playing some first and third person shooter games I though… why not try to make a shooter game which was simple enough to have two players on one keyboard?
And that’s what led to Lazer Horn demo being created and why it uses take controls. I never got back to finishing it because I was constantly working on Floppy Sports updates at least until I had run out of ideas for that game.
Chapter 2 - Getting creative
In between Floppy Sports updates I would work on other things so that I wouldn’t get burned out working on the same game constantly.
I made a small website which you can see here - https://just0in.gamejolt.io
Then I started making some models in Magica Voxel and created two models. The first was a Tank which originally started out as a dog but I found it difficult to created objects like a nose and ears and make it not look wired, so it needed up becoming a tank
Then I made another rocket model as an object for the tank to shoot. This one was more simple and didn’t take nearly as long to create.
If you curious you can see these 3D models here - https://sketchfab.com/just-in/models
Chapter 3 - A new perspective
I then realised something. Having the player in Lazer Horn be a tank simply made more sense. The game did use tank controls after all, so I replaced the players with tanks instead.
Rather then using the models I had created in Magica Voxel I simply used cubes from Unity to created more simple versions of the models. This was when I decided I should go for an NES feel as the more simpler models looked like 3D versions of 8-bit sprites. This lead to using 8-bit music but more importantly limiting the amount of buttons required to play so that the game could be played on a NES controller,
Well thats the first half of this… story? I guess… anyway I was originally going to put everything into a single post but I feel like it might be an overwhelming amount of text to read. So stay tuned for next time when we got through the last few chapters where we talk about the creation of Colour Cubes as well as other game mechanics.
Thanks for reading :)
