How should I add multiple playable characters?

Should I mess around with Mario's costumes or make seperate projects with different characters

I also want to add a map screen, so you don't just go to the next level

Also I haven't finished the mushroom yet

I remember when game jolt back then was just sonic.exe, undertale, kirby, FNAF and sometimes Mario fangames

Now its just another social media
