REVIEW:
Horror Vacui is a horror game that is VERY hard to give my opinion on. Almost every aspect of the game has me torn between love and absolute hatred of it. For example: the white static (or is it black static) creates an intense atmosphere of suspense that differs from most other games, but at the same time, I find it is very difficult to see anything through all the seizure-inducing micro flashes cluttering up my screen space. It seems that for every good aspect the game introduces, there is a side effect of equal proportion. This is why I have chosen to give this game such an "average" score.
Pros:
it's not a "cookie-cutter" horror game, and I applaud the the dev(s) for daring to be different.
Mehs:
white static ( as explained above)
-movement (was painfully slow, yet also made me feel a bit vulnerable which added to the suspense, so you could argue either way)
scary stuff (there was a lot of buildup, and at one point when I finally saw the monster, it was really creepy, but that was it. I felt like the game never crossed the bridge from "creepy" over to "scary", which is a real disappointment.
story (I wanted to love it, but I had no idea what was happening at any point... did I die from a freak hairdryer accident ?)
ending
Cons:
side effects may include exceptionally average feelings of indecisiveness.
All-in-all Horror Vacui is definitely worth a shot if you have the time to spare (about 15 minutes). There are a few other reviewers who absolutely loved the game, so maybe you will see what they saw.
To the dev(s): the point of my review is to provide constructive criticism by being as blunt as possible. Please note that I support all indie game developers in there efforts, and I wish you nothing but the best in current and future projects. Keep up the good work!
