Greetings Game Jolt!
We've recently made our page for Alula public to hopefully build up a little bit of interest around our new game. Alula is still very much in development so unfortunately wont be out for a little while. However, if you like Ruya we're confident you're going to love Alula! If you have any questions about the game feel free to drop us a comment or follow us on Twitter in the meantime.
About Alula
Alula is a stargazing gardening game about what it means to be alone in the universe. You find yourself on an island alone receiving messages in bottles. You slowly discover why you’re there and who’s sending you the messages. Potter about solving constellation-based puzzles, growing plants, and decorating your island in a wholesome and lush space. Join a digital commune of gardeners online, visiting their islands and sharing experiences with others in space and time.
Mechanics
Alula’s mechanics are best described as a management and puzzle game hybrid. Players have to balance their time from solving constellation-based puzzles to gather stardust whilst simultaneously caring for your island and keeping your plants alive. If you stargaze for too long, your island and plants wither and decay as a consequence but to unlock more plants you must stargaze.
Inspiration
The inspiration for Alula pulls in part from the short story of ‘The Egg by Andy Weir’, a theory for the nature of our existence. In the setup introductory sequence of Alula players are able to pre-determine player character traits. This aims to make our players reflect on their own lives as a player character that is potentially pre-created between the moment of death and re-birth. Players pick their personality, their favourite animals, their favourite colour, their fears, their loves and all of these choices affect the type of island that players will find themselves on. Alula pulls elements from spiritual teachers like Ram Dass, Terence McKenna, Alan Watts and nature. Our team grow their own food, are huge plant lovers and thinkers which is reflected in the work that we pursue.
