Huge Progress Update - 01-15-2022


Happy new year everybody!

At long last, a new progress update devlog for y'all GameJolt peeps! Ever since the page seemed to go on hiatus, I've been working behind the scenes with my fellow team members as I get closer to completing SCW.

Let's get to the updates:

Story Mode

As of January 6, 2022, Story Mode's world map and its respective battle stages and bosses were completely finished.

If you're curious, here's the list of things I've implemented into Story Mode recently:

  • All the battle maps are complete. This also includes boss battles!

  • Key doors and secret key shops have been implemented. There are new sprites for the key shops, which I will be showcasing later on.

  • Story Mode has been given lots of new music tracks, composed by Hexelectron and RazeZX! These will also be showcased later on. I'm just gotta note though that Raze's working on 2 more tracks which are not released yet, so you'll get to see them soon. (Also we got some bangers in the house yo!)

  • Chance Time shops - You get or lose points, or get an item if you're feeling lucky.

  • Warp Zones - these go hand-in-hand with key doors to allow the player to progress faster, due to the lack of a save system. Good luck beating the whole Story Mode (all levels) if you're this endured enough, it's probably as long as watching a movie.

  • Cameos - these include Marga & Cassie Mondragon from Kadenang Ginto, CindyChan's Turnip army from Super Cat Tales 4 Jugadores (affiliated with SCW), and a whole lot more!

STORY MODE NEW MUSIC TRACKS

SKIN UPDATES

As of January 15, 2022, a lot of new skins were added to Super Cat Wars.

First, I'd like to start with all of the skins for Little Fin. This is from another game by Neutronized with the same name, and includes skins from the mobile version as alternate costumes.

There's been a couple new skins added from Nitrome games by me. These include Yolk from Leap Day (sprited by RazeZX), Platform Panic characters (Radd Bradd, Spacegirl?, Sir Jumpalot, Plumber, etc.) (sprited by Hexelectron), and even the spikes from Spike City (sprited by Hexelectron). There's also Deltarune crossover characters now, with me including Kris, Susie, and Ralsei (at the time of this devlog's writing, I've also considered adding Spamton lol).

There's tons of new skins added now to SCW, including Easter Bunny from Egg Blast, The Knight from Hollow Knight, and more, but what's important here is there's now an Excel spreadsheet in the documentation folder that contains all the credits for the skins that appear in-game. This includes their alt costumes as well, so feel free to browse through this documentation when the mod comes out!

I'm just gonna note that all the skins are revealed in the Discord server for SCW, which you can join from the GameJolt page for this mod.

New Super Mario War / SCW Build Updates

  • Added support for up to 32 moving platforms, special thanks to mmatyas. We've researched the maximum amount of platforms together, and it turns out the map format can support more than 8 platforms (about 65000!), as 8 platforms is an editor limitation only.

  • Custom race goal/Capture the Flag locations menu (press J) has been in the editor for a long while, but since it's not displayed on the help screen/documentation in the editor, information about it has been added to the help screen as well as the Level Editor documentation so players won't miss out on it.

And some bug fixes. Remember you can report bugs for SMWar's mmatyas build by reporting them in the SCW Discord.

Super Cat Tales 2 - World 1 Remake

One of my original plans for SCW was to add a remake of World 1 from Super Cat Tales 2, based on the SMB3 World 1 remake from Super Mario War. This project's now complete. Here are some screenshots from it:

I'm just gonna note while these attempt to stay true to their original versions, these are not 1:1 accurate to the original source, due to me working with the tiles I've ripped so far in SCW + the lack of a slopes system in SMWar's original source code.

This will become a playable world in SCW's full release.

Planned Release Year

We're almost done with SCW, alright? This year, it looks like we're getting closer to this project being fully complete, and it is evident by the completion of Story Mode and SCT2 World 1, as well as the original soundtrack for it being very close to completion.

For this, I have planned Super Cat Wars' release to be sometime around Spring 2022, if all goes well. Thank you for sticking around and waiting for so long!
