I have to say, one of the inspirations for my Nightmares opening their faces is because in the game "When the Lights To Go Dim," by @Fredinator 
Nightmare Freddy also opens his face.
Another reason is history.
Here they are physical prototypes, and we use "nightmares" as a name because they are a torment and because they are not like that but C.C.nos sees it that way, pointing towards the flaw, They are some of William's first prototypes for capturing children, the predecessors of the Funtime animatronics.
