Papyrus was a cherished member of the Royal Guard. He fought tirelessly to ensure the safest environment for the king and the citizens of the Underground. He was beloved by all. Papyrus was probably the most cherished monster in the Underground, next to the king.

That’s what made everything so devastating when he fell. Chara, the first fallen human, did a Genocide route, and when Papyrus tried to stop them, he got cut down by Chara. Chara proceeded to the king’s throne room, and Asgore, king of the Underground, stepped in and took Chara’s SOUL. With the SOUL, Asgore hoped to break the barrier between the humans and monsters. 

Papyrus’s brother, Sans, was mourning Papyrus’s death quite severely. Locals say they heard him shout, “He can’t be gone !He can’t!” from his home in Snowdin. Sans became obsessed with trying to find a way to bring Papyrus back. He speculated that the human SOUL was key. Sans became a recluse, experimenting with the human SOUL and whatnot. He learned dark magic, and became the Underground’s most powerful sorcerer. 

Then, one day, through tireless research, Sans finally figured it out. He found that with the combined power of 6 human SOULs, he, with his magic power, could revive Papyrus. He told the king his discovery. The king then issued the Royal Guard to find any fallen humans, and report them. Then Sans would strike them down and extract their SOULs, then Sans would give the SOULs to Asgore. This, called the Human Watch, was extremely successful. In total, Asgore had 5 SOULs. 

The last SOUL needed was in a human called Lotus. The King held a massive search, desperate for that last SOUL. But the one most desperate was Sans. Sans was in an……… awful state. His eyes; bloodshot. His face; cracked. Due to his appearance, no one approached him. Sans’s mental health was at risk.

Lotus couldn’t turn a corner without a human reporting him to Asgore. So, it wasn’t a surprise that Sans found Lotus eventually. Sans went in for the kill, but Lotus dodged. Lotus then went for the kill, but Sans dodged. The battle repeated like this for a while. Eventually, Sans got sick and tired of the battle progressing like this, so Sans took off his coat. Due to this, Sans’s skills increased drastically; because his jacket wasn’t weighing him down. Sans easily killed Lotus. But, Sans knew Lotus would be back……

Humans had the power to an art called Saving and Reloading which has been used for decades. Saving and Reloading let you back in time, to try a certain part of life again. Sans had to somehow remove Saving and Loading from the game, Lotus had to defeat Sans…… once. Lotus came back, with the power of Saving and Loading…

Same as last time. Lotus made Sans take off his coat, and then Sans killed Lotus. Lotus returned and returned, but Lotus’s fate was the same, everytime.

As it seemed, Lotus was destined to fail. The only way Sans could win this fight is by making Lotus quit.

Finally, Lotus finally defeated Sans. But Sans just couldn’t let Lotus destroy the entire Surface, too.

So Sans committed a brave act. He channeled all his energy, and destroyed Lotus’s power of Saving and Reloading. 

Then, using the last of his power, he threw a scythe at Lotus, killing them. He crawled to Lotus’s body, and extracted Lotus’s SOUL. Now Sans could revive Papyrus.

But he didn’t. 

Sans became so obsessed with defeating Lotus that he forgot all about his mission for reviving Papyrus.

“Goodnight,” Sans muttered as he placed Lotus’s SOUL in a jar. “Your donation will go towards assassination.”
