Dawn of The First Day.
48 hours remain.
This is my first game jam equipped with GameMaker Studio 2! Let’s see what the theme is!
A place that feels like home
Um, okay, let’s brainstorm then..
I got to work firing up GameMaker and creating a Platformer, since that’s my strong point. Borrowing assets from “The Adventures of Penguin” I now had a working Platformer.
“Wait, now what?” thought me.
Lots of games have an award-winning mechanic right? So I just gotta come up with one…
After about an hour creating a mind map,
“Ah HA! This will be my mechanic!” I exclaimed. So I sat down and started to work. When I was finished with the mechanic and it’s assets, I started to wonder, what should I call it?
….
Okay why not call my “Homesickness”?
After all, this game is about getting home. So this mechanic is a simple one. Keep it below 100 and above 0, or you’ll die.
Now let’s create enemies! I’ll keep it simple. A simple running enemy! Now that that’s working, let’s pixel!
“Wait…. What should it look like???”
Well why not make them references to the country I come from? (Scotland)
Okay how about Cheerios, with Kilts on? Since Scotland grows lots of wheat and stuff, naturally, lots of cereals are made there! And Kilts since people wear that there!
Okay finished!
End of day 1.
24 hours remain.
Day 2:
Okay, the UI’s done! Now we need to work on level design!
I constantly would go to the whiteboard drawing out levels and then returning to the computer to make the levels, while tweaking things.
For the rest of the day I made levels and then uploaded the game.
End of jam!
I hope you enjoyed this GameDev story.
Now tell me yours in the comments!
Thanks for the support!
