Anya is the only female protagonist in Mouthwashing, and immediately when I watched the playthrough for the game, alarm bells immediately rang. No way nothing would happen to this girl.
And I noticed (obviously no hate to specific ppl) when I watched different playthroughs, I saw different reactions.
When Anya told Curly she was pregnant, Female players actually shared the same opinion as I did, with her being the only female being a red flag, and Male players brushing it off.
And after learning that Anya and Jimmy had were not in a relationship, I knew exactly what happened.
Also, to make this deeper, obviously, Jimmy isn't actually attracted to cartoon horses. He's referring to Anya, but not in a way we expected. At the end of the game, Anya's text color changes to the color of Polly, the cartoon horse mascot for Pony Express. I wondered if this meant he saw her as an animal, just used for his own satisfaction.
And further, the dead pixel conversation between Anya and Curly gave me a whole new perspective on Curly's character. One reason Curly was seen as a bad guy for Female viewers was because he neglected the fact that maybe Jimmy was infact, not just a horrible guy, but a sexual assaulter. He knew this, additionally, but chose to ignore it.
This connects the different reactions from male and female players, being Females acknowledged this, and Male players did not, just as Curly did, to defend his friend.
And the difference for what different players see him as a villain for varies with this. I saw Jimmy as a villain because of what he did to Anya, and others for what he did to Curly.
What makes this worse is also during the dead pixel conversation, Curly confirms that there is 8 months left until the trip is over, after the event between Anya and Jimmy.
Anya has been forced to face and be near her abuser.
And it's not like Male players neglected it, I just don't think they realized, or wasn't obvious to them.
Jimmy and Curly's perspective of Anya are very different.
When we play as Curly, Anya is more human, real. In Jimmy's perspective... Not as much. Just a bland slate. Because that's all he sees her as.
To top it all off, Curly and Anya have a similar connection. Curly was brutally injured and burnt, kept alive and trapped in a painful and God awful body. Anya has a baby inside her, and also has to deal with the Pain, without a way out. Trapped. Just like Curly.
As a conclusion, if you read all this, I swear nothing was hateful or directed at anyone, just an analysis.
