I came up with the idea for Run 3 days ago. I usually pick my girlfriend at the subway around 11PM, as she comes home from college. Three days ago she called telling me she would be late due to a violent protest in Heliópolis, a neighborhood through which she commutes. I went to pick her up at the bus stop around 2AM and I was followed by a junkie beggin’ for a meal from my house to the stop (roughly 400 yards).
This is something common in São Paulo. And although the man that followed us (we went to an arab fast food to grab her dinner) for a long time, he wasn’t violent. Many times people aren’t that lucky. Everyone of my friends has a similar story, some have even been threatened with guns and other weapons.
On our return home from the restaurant we felt terribly insecure. RUN was made for the EGP’s theme of September. It represents not only the failure to win (you can only lose in RUN) but society’s failure to cope with itself.
The game stands apart from this, my goal was to recreate the feeling of lacking security and the ways we deal with this.
