Inspire: The Guardians of Light (Thoughts) - The Motivations of Dolorem [Beware Minor Spoilers for plans of Jack’s future chapters]

So with Mark’s first chapter complete the next chapter will be Jack’s introduction chapter. Even though it’s not going to be the chapter that introduces his antagonist I feel like talking about Dolorem to give you guys a bit of clarity about her presence and role in the story. Dolorem is a Demon of Sorrow that has been invited to fight alongside Sparta and his crew of powerful Demons in their conquest of the world of Inspire. Originally she was just a random character made to fill the void that is Jack not having any demons besides Anti to fight across all of his fan games. But then I thought about ways to have her be more than just a random demon coming along to fight Jack just because he’s the odd man out.

In short, Dolorem is envious of Jack.

Allow me to explain. As a Demon of Sorrow, Dolorem gains power by bringing sorrow to people. In fact, Jack will ally himself with Ryder, an angel whose soul was corrupted by a demon while he was human, making him a demon-angel hybrid when he joined the angels in Heaven. Because of this, many of the other angels treated him poorly, making him depressed. Dolorem fed on his sorrow for centuries until he finally found a way to accept himself for who he was. Her power only seemed to weaken when Jack started doing YouTube. His nearly-always happy personality helped people with their sorrows and made them happy, weakening Dolorem’s power even more. As much as she hates Jack for his abilities, she can’t help but feel envy for his power to make the sad happy. And this is why she wants to turn Jack into another sad soul to prevent him from taking away any more of her power. Of course, besides Jack there is Ryder and his daughter-in-law; a Devil-Succubus by the name of Valeria (who shows up in Mark’s story), who wish to see Dolorem defeated to prevent her powers from growing any more.

Dolorem will stop at nothing to stop Jack, but if Jack can build up his team and learn to control his Jackie-boy Man form, he has a chance at defeating Dolorem and ensuring that her reign of Sorrow can never again grow to the heights of the days of old.
