Hey everybody!
It’s been quite a while since my last devlog post, so I wanted to share some of the latest updates.
Development is still coming along nicely and, so far, I have all but completed the first room of the Cave (the “Cathedral” room). Although there are still a few bugs to work out, some art updates, and a few minor functionalities, its pretty much ready!
And speaking of which, I have also completed about 90% of the gameplay from the tutorial level! Surprise! There is still some intro narrative stuff to work out, a few art assets to make still, and some gameplay balancing issues to work out, but its also pretty much good to go! (Check out the new screenshots!)
XPO TULSA GAME FESTIVAL LAST WEEKEND
Due to the great timing of these two levels being ~70%ish done (and 100%ish) playable, I was able to slap them together and make a pretty decent demo to show at the 2017 XPO Tulsa Game Festival last weekend!
The game seemed to get a lot of attention from the attendees and I received a lot of positive feedback, so that’s good! My booth was busy for the entire event, and I had several players come back for more, so it looks like I may be onto something with this game after all! Also, just as importantly, I was able to watch dozens of people play the game and gather info for balancing purposes. And just in case you didn’t know, YES THIS GAME IS INTENDED TO BE HARD, and the results of the XPO Demo showed that I managed to accomplish this task. It is intended to be difficult, but not frustrating, so the feedback I received will be extremely useful for the future.
I also had a great time meeting other indie devs and talking shop. Although I made several new friends and got a lot of great insight from some pros, I have to say my favorite was the conversations I was able to have with Bill Gardner and Jim Bonney from The Deep End Games. Bill was previously the lead designer on Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite, and Jim was the sound designer for Bioshock Infinite and Mortal Kombat. Not only was it great to pick the brains of two of the industry’s greatest in their respective fields, but to hear so much positive feedback from both of them in regard to my game is SUPER gratifying and motivating. If you haven’t checked out their current game, Perception, please do! Especially during this spooky time of year.
Thanks for reading, and I’ll keep you updated!
