James Franklin has been fired from head coach at Penn State after suffering 3 straight losses to Oregon, UCLA, and Northwestern. More below.


James Franklin became the head coach for Penn State after following a successful stint at Vanderbilt. He arrived as the head coach in 2014. Here are his breakdowns for each season.

2014: Led Penn State to a 6-6 record with a Pinstripe Bowl victory over Boston College, winning 31-30.

2015: Led Penn State to a 7-5 record, losing 24-17 to Georgia in the TaxSlayer bowl.

2016: Led Penn State to an 11-3 record, winning the Big Ten’s East Division, and winning the Big Ten Championship 38-31 over Wisconsin. Lost Rose Bowl 52-49 over Southern California. Finished #7 in the nation. James Franklin won the Dave McClain Coach of the Year in the Big Ten.

2017: Led Penn State to an 11-2 record. Won the Fiesta Bowl 35-28 over Washington. Penn State finished #8 in the nation.

2018: Led Penn State to a 9-4 record. Lost 27-24 in the Citrus Bowl to Kentucky. Finished #17 in the nation.

2019: Led Penn State to an 11-2 record. Won the Cotton Bowl 53-39 over Memphis.

2020: Led Penn State to a 4-5 record.

2021: Led Penn State to a 7-6 record. Lost the Outback Bowl 24-10 to Arkansas.

2022: Led Penn State to an 11-2 record. Won the Rose Bowl 35-21 over Utah. Finished #7 in the nation.

2023: Led Penn State to a 10-3 record. Lost the Peach Bowl 38-25 to Ole Miss. Finished #13 in the nation.

2024: Led Penn State to a 13-3 record. Made the Big Ten Conference Championship, losing 45-37 to Oregon. Made the College Football Playoffs. Won the first round 38-10 over Southern Methodist. Won the CFP quarterfinal Fiesta Bowl 31-14 over Boise State. Lost the CFP semifinal 27-24 over Notre Dame. Finished #5 in the nation.

2025: Penn State was the preseason #2 team. After winning their first three games, they dropped their next three, losing to #6 Oregon, unranked UCLA, and unranked Northwestern. He was fired today, earning a $56 million buyout. He had an overall record of 104-45, with a 4-21 record against top-10 opponents. He won 5 bowl games, a Big Ten Championship with two appearances, and a CFP appearance, winning two CFP games. A replacement hasn’t been chosen yet.
