May Progress Update (3rd Anniversary!)

Howdy folks!

It’s been quite a while since the last progress update, huh? I didn’t post one in April as I stated that I wanted to focus more on getting Chapter 1 completed that month, but unfortunately there’s a lot of other things besides DF that I need to put my attention towards as well, such as college, fitness, family, etc. College specifically has been eating up a lot of time, since it’s the final few weeks and there’s a lot of crunch to get work done in time. As a result, development on Chapter 1 has slowed to a crawl.

That being said, there’s no way I wouldn’t post something this month since it’s a very special day for DF today: the game has officially turned 3 years old!

This game has been around since May 22nd, 2016. It’s very weird to think that this game has been a part of my life for so long, but thanks to you guys it’s been a very interesting journey, and I feel privileged to be a part of this community. Thank you for sticking around this long!

To celebrate the occasion, I’d like to share some never-before-seen screenshots of the VERY FIRST VERSION of the game! These screenshots are over 3 years old, and I feel like now is a good time to share them. Take a look:

So what do you think? Looks like a completely different game, right? Originally you would play as Sans, and help out Doctor Gaster with an experiment that would ultimately lead to his demise. I only ever got as far as making the first 5 minutes of the game before I scrapped the idea, and began creating what eventually became the Old Beta. You may have noticed that the Gaster sprite made for this game was eventually re-used for the Old Beta, and that the laboratory as well was also re-used in both the Old Beta in a flashback, and the Multiplayer Demo as the spawn room.

As far as I know I don’t have the project file for this version of the game anymore, which is unfortunate. All that’s left are these 5 screenshots. But some ideas I came up with for this version of the game are actually still being used to this day, so its legacy still lives on! And who knows, maybe the classic Gaster will make an appearance again one day?

But enough reminiscing, let’s move on to some current news for the game! Now, I have some good news and bad news. I’ll share the bad news first.

The bad news is that Chapter 1 will not be coming out until sometime this summer after college has ended, since there’s no way I can dedicate myself to both at the same time. Chapter 1 is a huge endeavor, and I prefer developing it in big chunks rather than adding small bits and pieces every so often, since it can get confusing to remember where the game is at in terms of progress each time I try to work on it. I hope you guys can understand that I still want to finish Chapter 1 in a reasonable amount of time, but since this game is just a passion project, I can’t prioritise it over my education. The game has no set release period, just assume sometime this summer for now.

But don’t worry, there’s some good news! While Chapter 1 takes a lot of time to work on, an update to the old multiplayer demo does not. I’ve stated before that the old demo won’t be supported further, but I believe I’ve created a fix for the PvP problems that people have been having, and I decided that if I was going to update the demo to fix it then I might as well shove some more stuff in there for you guys, too. Therefore, U14P6 will be releasing sometime in the near future!

Currently the changelog for U14P6 is as follows:

  • Made improvements to the PvP invitation system to help solve persistent crashing issues.

  • Added new collectibles exclusive to Offline Mode! Collect spaghetti, star pieces, and the hard-to-find annoying dogs! Talk to certain characters to summon these new collectibles. Finding them gives you new trophies on the Main Menu, as well as some gold and other goodies!

  • Added two new random encounters: Vegevoid and Erroron! These are the glitched counterparts of Vegetoid and Aaron. You can now find them in all of the grind rooms! (Finally, some new enemies!)

  • The Golden Frisk skin, which has been reported to make Frisk useless for PvP, now requires the Frisk skin to be a certain level before it can be used.

  • Fixed a bug with Offline Mode where the Stats menu wouldn’t display properly.

  • Fixed a bug where the Mettaton minigame would crash in Offline Mode.

  • Other fixes.

Now, the new update isn’t done yet, so if there’s any other suggestions you have for it, please let me know in the comments below! I’m more than happy to make the old demo even better for you guys while you wait for Chapter 1!

Welp, that’s all I have to share for this progress update. Once again, thank you all for the past three years, they wouldn’t have been as fun without you! Remember to stay determined, and I’ll see you all again next month for another update!
