so ever since Sword and Sheild the pokemon company has refused to reintroduce mega evolutions. a beloved mechanic that had been around since gen six (and was one of only three things people actually remember from gen 6). but why? why would they do this? well let's look at the flaws of mega evolution and other insentives the comany might have had to remove the feature entirely
oversatration. once megas were put in the game they completely morphed competitive around it with some megas *cough* kangaskhan *cough* were completely broken, in VGC if you weren't using mega kanga you were actively handicapping yourself unless you were using something to specifically counter mega kanga. as wolfy put it "pokemon became like chess, where you were only trying to protect these big pieces". so of course when pokemon removed megas from competitive they learned their lesson and replaced them with something that was completely fair and balan-- PFFFT I can't even finish that sentence without laughing, hell no they got even worse at balancing the game and introduced a mechanic that was so broken it's even banned in ubers
poor choices. one of the biggest selling points for mega evolution was that it gave life to weak pokemon that desperately needed it like mawile and beedrill. but for every deserving mega it felt like we got three undeserving megas. just to set a few examples
garchomp: the only mega that is actually WORSE than the base form, because a pokemon with a base 600 stat total and was banned from ubers in it's debut generation CLEARLY needed a power boost at the cost of it's speed...it's most defining aspect....what the fuck were they thinking?
tyranitar: again a base 600 stat pokemon that was already super common in competitive just NEEDED and extra 100 points added to its BST, literally nothing else was changed, it's typing and ability didn't change just it's stats
the latis: I think you're getting the point, high base stat pokemon that were already vialbe getting unesicary power boosts
money. for some reason the pokemon company thinks every generation needs some kind of gimmick for it to sell even though gens 3-5 didn't need much in terms of gimmicks to be relevant. but the geniuses at gamefreak decided that every generation would need some kind of "hook" gen seven introduced Z moves which didn't really do much competive wise the only pokemon that signifigantlybenifitted from it was komo-o (because a base 600 stat total needs an omniboost for some reason) and necrozma who needed the Z move to transform into it's new form that is even stroner than god himself, so Z moves dind't stick and gamefreak went crawling back to mega evolutions for lets go P and E, then in gen 8 they tried dynamax and singlehandedly slaughtered any chance of competitive being fair and balanced, because they had to cut half the dex for balanced mons like dracovish and galarian darmanatan and the totally not overpowered gimmick of Dynamax. this mechanic didn't stick either and was completely dropped after SWSH even the very next games BDSP didn't even touch dynamax (although that could have been because they were scared to try anything new for the gen four remakes but that's a rant for another day) and it looks like it's not coming back for LA either.
maybe these past three attempts at a gimmick will teach the pokemon company a lesson, that lesson being to either being back megas or to stop with these new gimmicks altogether as besides mega evolution they just didn't stick, who here can honeslty say they liked Z moves? or that dynamax was fair and balanced? if they ever go back to these gimmicks let's hope they go back to mega evolutions and refine it to make it more balanced ant to give it to more deserving pokemon
