More 3D models and Christmas break

Hello again!

Today. I will mostly talk about 3D models, a little on my goal on this project and we will take a break!

Last week until holiday

We have already entered the fourth week on Submarine Explorer which I think is just crazy. It kind of feels like the first week was just yesterday and today is already the fourth week. Not only from this project, but the whole year. For me, this year has been the fastest one. It was summer just a couple of weeks ago and now it’s already winter. Where was autumn? And now, it’s already Christmas this Sunday! (in Sweden we celebrate on the evening of the 24’th)

Lots of 3D models

What have I been working on since my last post? I have been working with 3D models by using Blender. I started last Wednesday and worked with it every school day to gain more experience and knowledge to 3D modeling. So far, I think 3D modeling is really fun. With enough experience you can create anything you can imagine.

So far, I have been creating a couple of different 3D models. More different creatures, environment and things.

This is a new creature that I have created in two days. It is a giant red whale shark (Boomerang fish for scale). I had the idea to make a giant fish that will almost cover the sky when you are under it. I drew the texture and tried to animate it for the first time. This one was a challenge that I had to face. When I made my other 3D models, it was done by only moving, rotating and scaling different geometry until you have somewhat of a 3D model.

The giant whale shark was much more difficult. I didn’t want to just add different geometry. I wanted to shape a single geometry until It has the body of a whale shark. This was done by using the extrude tool to drag out and form the body.

When I finally made the body, I had to animate it which was also a new challenge. I created skeleton bones so it can swim, but there was one problem that I had. It wouldn’t move when I played the animation. The solution was pretty funny but a little bit of embarrassing. I had to record the frames which I forgot.

When making the environment in the water, what was the first thing I wanted to make? Corals was the first thing that came to my mind. This was the first idea of a coral that I made.

I think that this coral was one of the more easier 3D models I have made. It was done by only extruding and scaling a cylinder in different ways.

This is another form of the corals that I made. But this one is more circular. This was also one of the easier 3D models I have made. I pressed a sphere until it was almost flat. Selected every other edge, dragged it down and twisted it to create a spiral coral.

There is a couple more 3D models that I would really love to share. But I have the feeling that if I post every single 3D model, there won’t be a surprise when playing it for the first time.

My goal

After I reached out to the company that helps children and youths with their disabilities. Well, I still haven’t got contacted by them yet. I will try to get in touch with them again after the break.

The future

What will we be working on in the future? After our Christmas break, we only have four more weeks left until our development of Submarine Explorer and exam is done. We have almost completed all the core mechanics in the game. When all that is done, we will be making more content such as levels and 3D models.

Christmas break

One last note. This will be the last week of developing Submarine Explorer until me and my group will take a break from Submarine explorer. During our break, we might not update the blog as frequently as our regular schedule. During my break, I will be going home and visit my parents to celebrate Christmas over there together with my parents and relatives. We will be back at developing Submarine Explorer at January 2 2018. Have a wonderful day and merry Christmas to you all!

Regards
Tim

Shoobies leave a sticky trail of mucus in their wake, which can impede movement for any creature that steps in it.

In the quest for accessibility, I'm adding Resurrection Shrines for players on the 'novice' end of the platforming spectrum.

In order to unlock the power of a Shrine, you must collect 3 'Souls' from your dead corpses! (the floating blue orbs)
