Hey everyone! Merry Christmas! Speaking of Christmas, I got a Meta Quest 3! So, this is my first impressions review!
The Good
The first thing that truly blew me away was easily the colour passthrough. It was just amazing to see full colour passthrough with little to no warping. Something that also blew me away was the resolution and framerate. The menus look so crisp and I love it! Even Half-Life: Alyx on Steam Link was incredibly smooth. I also loved how easy it was to set up. I got it working within minutes! The only issue I ran into during setup was my phone not pairing with the headset, and even that was quickly fixed! And I've also never seen the lenses fog up which is great!
The Bad
I am genuienly sad that the flaws in this headset are absolutely massive flaws that can sometimes ruin your whole experience. One of the issues that I'm not sure if there's a fix for it the lack of haptic feedback. While playing VTOL VR through link I didn't know if I was holding something while I wasn't looking because the controllers simply didn't shake. Another issue is that the battery life is actually worse than the Quest 2. Which suprised me at first. This headset is extremely expensive and yet the battery life and the time it takes for it to charge is worse that the cheaper, older alternative. And this one doesn't really matter, but the mic is really bad. However this flaw that I'm about to explain almost ruined the headset for me, and that flaw is the headstrap. The headstrap pulls the top of the facial interface straight into my forehead, causing alot of discomfort. This might be me just being used to the elite strap, but I hate the default strap so much that I would gladly kill whoever designed it. I did adjust it and kind of got used to the strap though, but it's still uncomortable and I have to play with the strap loose which raises the chance of me fracturing my neck while playing.
Overall - Is it good?
Honestly, I love this headset, but it feels like Meta just focused on the graphics, storage, power and passthrough. They didn't take the time to look at the major flaws of the Quest 2 and fix them. If you're thinking of getting the Quest 3, go ahead! It's an amazing headset, but make sure to get a battery elite strap. If I had to rate this out of 10, I would say 7. It's great but really needs some work.
