My impressions of Deltarune Chapter 3 (Spoiler alert! Don't read if you haven't played it yourself)

So, in short, I can describe it as a meme chapter, which is almost entirely built on references to old Toby Fox games, old TV shows, NES-era video games, and something more modern and comical.

There won't be many spoilers for the plot here, but this time, after waking up in a new dark world and meeting Ralsei, he says that he would love to go with Kris and Susie to the festival, but he can't, because he is Darkner and he is not real. Soon they meet a local leader named Tenna, who offers them to participate in TV games, and Ralsei suggests that they do this since they can't all go to the festival together. And that's what we will be doing for most of the game, playing mini-games.

There are many different mini-games in here, some of them require you to do everything quickly, some require you to think, and they are more tied to puzzles. They are cool, I liked the most NES games a la Zelda and the Rhythm game where you had to play rock (I heard some people almost got softlocked on it, but I completed it without problems). I will say honestly, I do not like rhythm games, and I am glad that in this mini-game you can get points by stupidly banging the Z and X keys, as I did and as befits a hard rock.

There aren't many boss fights in this chapter, and in general it is shorter than the first two (I really did not notice how I already reached the final battle with Tenna and the ending). I did not complete the secret boss, but some say that there is one in this chapter, and I want to find and complete it myself, without guides, so that there are no spoilers, as Toby Fox himself wanted. Also I don't know if there is a continuation of the Weird Route (Snowgrave) from Chapter 2.

As I said at the beginning, this chapter is very comical. I find it pretty funny when pixel games have moments, where developers take some PNG image, pixelate it and insert it into the game. These things don't fit the environment at all and that's the whole point. Well, there's plenty of that here, as well as periodic sound inserts that either parody TV games or are directly taken from Undertale or previous chapters of DR. And, like, this partly explains where such a strange thing as "Friend Inside Me" came from. On the one hand, it's nice to hear familiar music in the author's new game, but on the other hand, there's not that much new music in the game, as well as new characters, who also, by the way, parody one moment from Undertale.

The music is amazing, as always, you can feel that Toby Fox vibe, and although there aren't as many new compositions as I said, there are a few tracks that really suit the atmosphere and I liked them the most (I'll call them as they are listed in the game files, since the soundtrack for the new chapters hasn't been officially released yet): ch3_tvtime, tv_results_screen (slowed down in game), rudebuster_boss

Speaking of the atmosphere, in this chapter it surprised me both pleasantly and unpleasantly, on the one hand it was cool to see these comical backgrounds and decorations of the studio and backstage, but on the other hand, they don't create an atmosphere similar to a dark world, like in the previous chapters. I know that in this universe these are more like worlds of living objects, which we've been shown and explained many times, but this time it's too visible. But I must give credit where it's due, the game has dark moments with an atmosphere that is more like a dark world. The animations and pixel art are pleasing to the eye as always, you can't find fault with that.

Overall, I can give Chapter 3 a 7/10, the game itself is good, but it's weird in a good way. Toby probably realized this and that's why he decided to release Chapters 3 and 4 together. And Chapter 4 has a lot to appreciate, and I liked it more in many ways, but more on that next time.
