FNAF 1 but better??? (kinda)
Essentially fnaf 1 but somewhat peaked, I say someone because the gameplay loop is great, but with one "tiny" issue.
Gameplay
Ah yes, the focus of FNAW as a whole (Atleast after the second game.) The gameplay. While I do believe Wario's has perfected the FNAF 1 style of gameplay, there's one glaring issue. We'll get to that.
Night 1
Night 1, your typical standard FNAF night on steroids.
Wario and Waluigi are active tonight, both acting like Bonnie and Chica from FNAF 1 Respectively. Wario goes to the left, Waluigi to the right.
It's honestly a great way to get you settled into the gameplay loop, teaching you the basics.
In fact, I only died four times this night!
Yeah, I'm not gonna sugar coat it, Wario and friends don't play around when it comes to power usage, as ALL my deaths on night 1 were solely caused by power alone.
Why? Because the lights drain 1% every time you turn them on. Also they max out your usage instantly. This night is all about learning to play, and the game forces you to play against what would usually be walk in the park mechanics VERY differently.
With the doors characters, you want to use the lights as little as possible, and instead focus on using your cameras to see if someone is attacking. The cameras have a much bigger role in this game than they do in FNAF 1, which I really like. The way the lights are made less useful, but still important is very well done.
Once you beat Night 1, its time to move on to Night 2.
Night 2
Night 2 adds one new character, Luigi.
Luigi is the last time we'll see these familiar faces reprise their door mechanics, he does to either door and you must shut him out. Luigi, while being quite simple, adds a lot to the gameplay loop. You can no longer say "Well, Wario just attacked so I don't need to bother with that side for a bit." for Luigi can go to either side, thwarting your plans of relaxation.
Night 3
Here's where the tone of gameplay takes a dramatic shift, I mean it. A new foe comes to make things difficult, Peach. If you check your cameras, you'll now see a button saying "Toggle Map". If you click it, it well, toggles the map. Duh. This is how you'll stop Peach. If you hear walking or "singing" which sounds closer to someone dragging a chair across the floor, you have to press a button saying "Toggle Lamp". This will not toggle a lamp, but instead light up the dark rooms. If you use this, you loose a chunk of power. That is, unless Peach is in the room. If you successfully catch her while she's on route to your office, she retreats to CAM A until she attempts to get to you again.
Peach throws a MASSIVE wrench in the typical gameplay, majorly improving the gameplay loop into something super solid. The mechanic is very difficult to learn, as is everything else, and Peach is VERY quiet, but once I learned what I was doing I had a great time with Night 3.
Night 4
Oh, and now comes the real trouble maker in our perfect little gameplay loop. Remember Mario? Well, with how slowly that gameplay is paced surely he won't reprise his original mechanic, right?
Spoiler Alert:
He does.
Big whoop, I hear you say.
Big whoop indeed, I respond.
As Mario is more akin to the FNAF 2 Withereds, waiting in your office until you pull down the camera or they pull it down for you. Now, in FNAF 2, this is no issue. You can simply hover your mouse over that mask, even for a frame, and your all set!
In FNAW, you have to click the camera button.
In FNAF 2, the gameplay is very fast paced.
In FNAW, the gameplay up until now has been fairly slowly paced, while still keeping a perfect stressful balance.
Mario completely ruins this gameplay loop, instantly killing you if you get taken by surprise or fail to open the cameras back up the instant he attacks. Mario, by bringing in fast gameplay, ruins the slow, power conserving, calm gameplay that forced you to stay relaxed as everything was slowly going to hell.
Night 5
Night 5 adds no one new, instead being a final challenge of that now ruined gameplay loop. I got by fairly easily, since FNAW takes its deaths by making you learn instead of actual skill issues.
That or I'm just good at fnaf.
Probably the former.
Oh yeah, the ending cutscene. Honestly? The one time a FNAF Fangame protagonist was smart. Did his five nights, instantly got the fuck out of there and presumably quit.
Final Night
Woah woah woah, hold your horses, we aren't done yet! You know no fangame is a good game without your Sixth Night! Canon or not, this majorly changes the game. Presumably taking place in another timeline, as it makes no sense for it to take place before or after our five main nights. Makes you wonder why its called the "Final Night" instead of "Boss Night" or something like that.
Anyway, this time there is no pesky Mario here to thwart your pacing, or completely screw you over. There is only one threat, Wario. Wario will go to either of your doors, simply closing it will send him back to Cam 4 or Cam 7.
Did I mention the mechanics are different?
Now you must constantly search the cameras for unstable cameras (Indicated in the bottom left of the screen) and press the "Reset Power" button directly above the text displaying the camera state.
On top of this, while power is not much of a threat anymore, there is another mechanic. Your doors will heat up rapidly if they are shut, and if they overheat they will drain a lot of power and automatically reopen for a moment. Closing both doors is thankfully not required to beat this night, probably because it heats up so much.
Throughout the night, your vision slowly goes purple. You begin to see the world turning, presumably your player (Who may or may not be Richard, the same guy you play as in the regular five nights. Likely not.) going insane until the final hour. By 5AM, you can hear the building collapsing as dust falls from the ceiling. Your vision slowly gets covered with an effect as the night ends.
6AM. You get to read two pages of Waluigi's Diary (more on that later), if you click the screen begins to shake as the sounds of the building collapsing fade back in. Cut to a scene with Wario's Factory's rubble over the night sky.
Other tidbits I liked
One thing I've always always hated is that fangames lock their custom nights, extras, and other cool shit behind a sixth night. If it were canon, it would make sense, but even non-canon ones lock shit behind them. Why? Its a bonus night, nothing more.
FNAW instead opts to give you what you wanted, instead of locking your rewards behind more gameplay, it gives you what you worked for and a bonus night. As it should be.
Honestly, that was one of the best parts about FNAW Deluxe for me. Not being forced to do extra bonus shit made said extra bonus night so much more fun to play through, knowing even if it was too difficult for most people to even try to beat. You didn't need to suffer through some insane challenge in order to unlock your rewards.
For that, I will forever praise this game. I would also praise it for its gameplay loop, but unfortunately Mario happened.
Night 3 goes hard 🔥🔥
Story
Ah, the FNAF essentials, how I adore you.
FNAW has quite a interesting story, however I'm going to pretend as if none of it is canon anymore, due to the series remaster (deluxe). Instead, I'll only refer to stuff that actually happened in FNAW: Deluxe.
You play as Richard McRoy, who just got a new job at Wario's Fast Food Factory. Wario's Fast Food Factory is kinda haunted, as you'll see the dead workers haunting the place throughout the night. The place has a eerie feeling, a haunting presence that'll follow you wherever you go as described by the phone guy.
Those workers were employees of the factory back in 2007, however they were all killed by a man by the name of Bruno Gate, who was trying to steal the secret recipe that made Wario's food so good. He stole and wore the Wario Man costume that night. This is presumably so if he got spotted by the workers he could try to convince them he was just Wario. However, he presumably gets caught trying to steal the recipe and ends up killing all of the workers and Wario. He also disappears alongside them, the bodies were never found.
This suggests that it is not ghosts that are trying to kill you, but instead the haunted corpses of Wario and his friends.
The Factory itself is built off of some old tunnels, though it seems as if they were built alongside the factory due to how accessible they are.
During Night 4, the phone guy mentions that they found the diarys of Wario and Waluigi. While he doesn't go much over Warios, he mainly goes over Waluigis (which we see when beating the Final Night). He notes that he relates to how Waluigi feels about the factory, and everything going on around him.
After Richards fifth night, he darts out of the building, supposedly to never return.
During the Final Night, no one but Wario is present. This could mean many things. Maybe everyone else has moved on and died. Maybe its not truly Wario. However in terms of when this night takes place, it appears to have no place in the timeline of FNAW: Deluxe. Presumably, it takes place in an alternate timeline as no evidence suggests otherwise. The mechanics of the night not including the map toggle, adding doors that apparently haven't been properly installed yet, and the building entirely collapsing in on itself in the end all support this theory.
It is unknown if we play as Richard during this night or not.
What is known is that whoever we play as is fucking dead lol
You CAN'T tell me dude stood there in the office AS THE BUILDING WAS COLLASPING, and SURVIVED.
We also get to see two pages in Waluigi's Diary, which phone guy references during the main nights. After this, the screen cuts to the destroyed factory.
Graphics
Never before has a FNAF fangame that looks like a bunch of PNGs stolen from google looked SO GOOD!
The visuals are insane, the sound design as well.
This game essentially made me relive my first time playing FNAF 1, the fear of the unknown as scary ambience I couldn't decipher played in the background alongside sounds that actually meant danger.
Anyway, visuals are so good they might actually be my favorite visuals of any fangame ever.
I really cannot put enough emphasis on how good this game looks, there aren't any words to describe it.
Conclusion
While the gameplay could've definitely spent more time in the oven, the story, visuals, sound design, and everything else are absolutely perfected down to even the tiniest details.
I am very excited for what's to come from this series remaster, especially with such a great start. Honestly? This game is home to one of my favorite final bosses in a FNAF fangame, alongside my favorite visuals. An absolute W of a game, I really hope that the team keeps this up.
